Unexpected restart or uncoverable freezes of some processes

Hi,
I have experienced some issues for one or two months, I assume since upting kernel 5.10.x. But switching to other kernels couldn’t fix them. I cannot repeat the issues deliberately, so I was not sure if I can track the problem and just ignored them. However, enoughis enough
I have unexpected freezes of some processes. I cannot name certain processes, it may be chromium first and it jumps to others, especially the newly started ones. Diminishing the ram or cpu usage (by killing processes) cannot fix it. In additon, some processes resist to being exited or killall command and turn to zombies. The resisting processes have Z or D states in htop output. Sooner or later I have to reboot and mostly use REISUB since I cannot use panel or too long boot time with “stop job” warning.
Sometimes I have an unexpected reboot instead of these freezes.
When I experience the freezes, my journalctl log writes some entries.
This happens one or two times a day. I experienced freeze today, it coincides with the log entry at Nis 08 17:19:52 of journalctl below.
How to understand what’s going on?

Some logs:

  • this point maybe the cause for some process
  • there is also microcode & family processor ( Ivy Bridge family )

Thank you, stephane.
Is there a way to fix it?

try with others kernels

  • linux5.4 LTS
  • linux419 LTS

I tried and experienced simillar issues with them. Actually 5.11 seems better than 5.10 and 5.4.
4.19 is EOL. (no it is not true::wink: : )

where have you seen that 4.19 is EOL ?
https://www.kernel.org/

Sorry my bad, it was 5.9.
I will try 4.19 for a while.

Hi,
After switching to linux419, for about 20 hours work, no freeze or restart.
Thank you for your advice.

By the way, I tried to dig the issue further.

1- topgrade says:
WARNING: Firmware can not be updated in legacy BIOS mode

2-. I remembered that I had installed PipeWire before, but then swithed back to pulseaudio. However, I had both the pipeire and the pulseaudio soud servers work simultaneously:

inxi -SMA

Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 14.2 running: yes
Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.24 running: yes

3- Also, I remembered that I had increaed RLIMIT_MEMLOCK as adviced here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PipeWire

Increasing RLIMIT_MEMLOCK

Dec 13 11:11:11 HOST pipewire-pulse[99999]: Failed to mlock memory 0x7f4f659d8000 32832: This is not a problem but for best performance, consider increasing RLIMIT_MEMLOCK

Install realtime-privileges and add your own user to the realtime group.

Alternatively, increasing memlock from 64kB to 128kB seems enough to fix this. If you are running pipewire-pulse under systemd/User, add:>

   username soft memlock 64
   username hard memlock 128

to /etc/security/limits.d/username.conf

So, I masked the pipewire.socket , stopped the pipewire.service and removed the /etc/security/limits.d/username.conf file. (I couldn’t find a way to turn pipewire server to running: no, but masking the pipewire service seems not to cause any problem up to now.)

I am not sure if these last things are relevant. I only know and happy that my laptop works well with linux419 :tada:
