Unable to login to X11 after enabling Wayland

Hi,

today I wanted to try out wayland on my laptop because I read that it is supposed to work better with multiple monitors with different scaling. I enabled Wayland with these steps:

I commented out WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm/custom.conf

I backed up my gdm-rules with this command:

sudo mv /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules.backup

Then I ran: ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules

Then I created /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia_drm.conf with the following contents:

options nvidia_drm modeset=1
options nvidia_drm fbdev=1
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

I think that was all I did if I remember correctly. Wayland is now running fine but some windows are really blurry on my laptop’s screen (3456x2160 at 200% with fractional scaling). So I wanted to switch back to X11 by logging out and trying to log back in with the Gnome on Xorg option but it keeps sending me back to the log in screen.

Here is my system information:

I would have used cp rather than mv? Where did you find the guide so we can take a look, cheers.

NB: I don’t have Nvidia so can’t really help with that, if it’s the issue.

I was trying to follow
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#DRM_kernel_mode_setting
and
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Wayland_and_the_proprietary_NVIDIA_driver

ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules said that the file already exsists, so I tried to mv it.

Same behavior on reboot?
Maybe Failure on logout ?

I used the same guide a few weeks ago, but had no problem switching to x11…

Did you remember to uncomment WaylandEnable=false again in /etc/gdm/custom.conf before trying X11 again? X11 may not like that being enabled. This is a guess.

Cheers.

I have no idea why but now the system won’t boot at all. It is just stuck at the dell logo. I tried booting from a love usb to change it back, but it still does not work.

Oops, I was editing the wrong conf file from the live usb. I managed to comment it back and now I am able to login using Wayland again. But Xorg still does not work.

Here’s the ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log from my last attempt to log in using Xorg.

You reverted that as well?

and this?

So that you truly are where you started from?

Yes, I think. I tried to revert everything again now and got stuck at the bootloader again. When I tried reversing it the first time I got only the Xorg options in gdm but still could not login.

Check to be sure?

ls -al /mountpoint/etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules
cat /mountpoint/etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules

ls -al /mountpoint/etc/modprobe.d/

The last should not yield nvidia_drm.conf
because you created it, it needs to go …

I renamed nvidia_drm.conf to nvidia_drm.conf.backup

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7348 16. říj 2023 etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules
total 24
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2. kvě 10.47 .
drwxr-xr-x 134 root root 12288 2. kvě 10.39 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 129 1. kvě 14.48 mhwd-gpu.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 110 1. kvě 14.21 nvidia_drm.conf.backup

Hm - so it appears that you are indeed back where you started from.
But it still doesn’t work - even though it did before, with exactly the same configuration.

I have no idea where to look or how to help. Sorry!

No worries, thanks for trying!

how are config files sourced from that directory? If it sources every file then it does not matter that it is named .backup, it still gets used.

Thanks everyone for help. I managed to get X11 working again. I had to delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/xorg.conf which I think I created using nvidia-xconfig.
