Unable to boot into the GNOME DE/GUI after installing Nvidia driver

Hi Everyone,

I am using an Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 Laptop and have been running Manjaro Cinnamon along side WIndows for a few months without any problems now. The Laptop has AMD onboard graphics and a RTX 3080 Laptop discreet graphics card built in as well. Yesterday I decided to give Manjaro Gnome 21.0.7 a try and installed it over the Cinnamon edition. I choose the “non-free driver” option at installation. The installation went fine, but then after reboot I would get a black screen. Using ctrl-alt-F2 I was able to login though and use the “startx” command to get into the gui.

I couldn’t sort out the problem, so I installed Manjaro again using the “free driver” option. This time I was able to boot into the gui. I then went over to the Manjaro Settings and had a look at the available drivers. The free driver was obviosuly installed, but there ewre two others availble. The Nvidia driver and the hybrid-amd-nvidia driver, If I can call it that. Through some trial and error I discovered that if I installed the hybrid driver it wouldnt boot into the GUI. but if I installed the nvidia only driver it worked and I could boot successfully. However,…there is a huge 1.2GB update that you need to do on the GNOME version right after installation that upates to GNOME 40 I believe. And after I do the update, I am unable to boot into the gui anymore. Not only that, but if I login using the tty and use the startx command it just hangs and doesnt allow me into the GUI anymore.

Right now I’ve done the installation over again with the free drivers and hopefully someone here can help me sort this out. I have done research since yesterday trying to fix this but nothing has helped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

Try the following in decreasing order if the previous one doesn’t solve the problem

  1. Try uninstalling Wayland from TTY2 and installing Xorg
  2. Try blacklisting the AMD GPU driver
    • Reboot

    • go to TTY2

    • post the output of

      journalctl --system --boot=0 --priority=3 | tail --lines=50

Hi Fabby, I just wanted to thank you for your reply. I hadnt seen it and only realised now that
you wrote me in an attempt to help me. I appreciate it!

I managed to solve the issue by adding amdgpu to the kernel modules. Then I was able to
boot into the GUI without issues.

Thanks again for your reply.
