System is dual-booted with Windows 10.
Steps that led to the problem:

  1. Attempted to rsync to an external flash drive. Operation failed due to “no storage left on device” error.
  2. Many parts of the OS started failing due to no space. Distinctly remember zellij failing.
  3. After restarting system, GUI would not start, so I booted into a TTY, confirmed that /dev/ had 0% free space.
  4. Ran pacman -Sc to clear out the disk space. GUI successfully booted after restarting.
  5. Strangely, the Whisker menu icons all reset to the defaults, with only Web Browser, Mail Reader, File Manager, and Terminal Emulator.
  6. OS seemed to work as usual, with the notable exception of Thunar not opening upon clicking the application. Worked again after a simple restart. Similar pattern over the last few days.
  7. Now, applications like Thunar, Timeshift, GParted, QDirStat, etc. no longer work, even after restarting. Here is the result of cat .xsession-errors:
/usr/bin/iceauth: creating new authority file /run/user/1000/ICEauthority
gpg-agent: a gpg-agent is already running - not starting a new one

du: Long running process with some personal files

It’s worth mentioning that the functionality actually just came back after another restart, so the corrupted behavior is effectively random. The root cause still remains unknown.

Hmm…

Well, it does seem as if your root is quite full. Perhaps check what’s taking all the space:

sudo du --max-depth=1 --human-readable /

/dev is a filesystem in virtual memory. It does not consume any disk space.

There it is. :point_up_2:

And this is why. :point_up_2:

You’ve got too many Snaps installed. Remove some of them — or all of them — and replace them with packages from the repository (or even from the AUR) where possible.
