Udemy Videos Not Playing on Firefox

Hey everyone,

I’m having an issue playing Udemy videos in Firefox on Manjaro Linux. The videos work just fine on Brave, but on Firefox, they just won’t load or play. I’ve scoured forums and tried every solution I could find, including this thread: Arch Linux Forum, but nothing seems to work for me.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Reinstalling Firefox with a fresh profile.
  • Enabling DRM content in Firefox.
  • Installing all relevant GStreamer plugins and updating drivers (I’ve already installed VA-API and Vulkan-Intel drivers).
  • Trying different video quality settings on Udemy.

I’m out of ideas at this point. Has anyone else encountered this issue on Manjaro with Firefox? Any help would be appreciated!

Firefox doesn’t support HEVC/H265. Udemy uses HEVC for some of its videos.

High Efficiency Video Coding - Wikipedia

As with its predecessor AVC, software distributors that implement HEVC in products must pay a price per distributed copy. While this licensing model is manageable for paid software, it is an obstacle to most free and open-source software, which is meant to be freely distributable.

While the obstacle to free software is no concern in for example TV broadcast networks, this problem, combined with the prospect of future collective lock-in to the format, makes several organizations like Mozilla and the Free Software Foundation Europe wary of royalty-bearing formats for internet use.
