Trying to run xtrkcad (installed from AUR)

I’m using Manjaro 26 XFCE and installed xtrkcad from the AUR (the only place I could find it in pamac). Installation seems to have succeeded but

  1. I can´t find the application in the start menu; this might be normal, it’s the first time that I installed from AUR. If it’snormal I can create a launcher.
  2. I get the following error when I try to run it (in a terminal)
/usr/bin/xtrkcad                                                 ✔
/usr/bin/xtrkcad: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

OK, a little searching the web gives that I have to install gtk2 and that results in the following error:

sudo pacman -S gtk2 [sudo] password for wim:
error: target not found: gtk2

More research on that says that I have to install glibc2 but that is installed

pamac info glibc Name : glibc

And now I’m a little lost and need advice.

In case it’s helpful the inxi -Zv8 output

The comments below the AUR repository on AUR (en) - xtrkcad give some hints about which package requires to be installed

Thanks @Pille

I must have missed that. I did use the graphical installer for this.

lib32-gtk2 is now installing from the terminal but it takes a bit of time. I will let you know.

For Arch based distributions i would always recommend using the command line tools
pacman
yay (or any other aur helper)

I am using the pamac GUI only for getting notified that an update is live.
If you want it a bit more comfortable pamac also runs in a terminal session and is able to update core and aur packages.

Apart from that it is always highly recommended to verify what’s going on in the AUR package. Not simply install it unchecked.

and Beta1-1 is not the latest version available…

GA-1 is the latest version, and here, if you like, is a current PKGBUILD

PKGBUILD

# Maintainer: CupIvan <mail@cupivan.ru>
pkgname=xtrkcad
pkgver=5.3.1
pkgrel=2
pkgdesc="CAD program for designing model railroad layouts."
url="http://xtrkcad-fork.sourceforge.net"
arch=('x86_64')
license=('GPL2')

_postfix="GA-1"
_srcname="xtrkcad-setup-${pkgver}${_postfix}.${arch}.sh"
source=("https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/xtrkcad-fork/XTrackCad/Version%20${pkgver}/xtrkcad-setup-${pkgver}${_postfix}.${arch}.sh")
md5sums=('913723cfcde550915b280f9cd6d67fab')

build() {
	chmod 0777 "${_srcname}"
	mkdir usr
	./${_srcname} --skip-license --prefix="usr"
}

package() {
	cp -r "./usr" "${pkgdir}"

}

OK, that solved the problem; took long as Manjaro is installed on an old external USB HD.

Created a launcher and it seems to work.

pamac info does not list any dependencies; I think that I even checked that before I did post the question

FYI
Also started xtrkcad from the terminal and get the following

/usr/bin/xtrkcad                                                 ✔

If something will give me problems I will install the themes and possibly canberra (I need to look up what that is).

Thanks a lot for the help :+1:

Thanks

If it’s not in the repos I’m less interested; stuff in repos is supposed to be (kind-of) stable.

More to learn

How did you find the GA-1 (just trying to learn)? I initially downloaded the .deb from sourceforce but after looking up how to install a deb in Manjaro it did not sound like a good idea to try.

all versions can be found at

the PKGBUILD from the AUR still contains beta1-1. ( Version 5.3.1 Beta1 ) (2025-06-30)

line 12:

source=("https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/xtrkcad-fork/XTrackCad/Version%20${pkgver}%20Beta1/xtrkcad-setup-${pkgver}Beta1-1.${arch}.sh")

the latest version is GA-1. ( Version 5.3.1 ) (2025-10-15)

i just check which version is the latest and then modify the PKGBUILD.

i’m learning a lot in the process, and it’s just a test.

(this time i ran into trouble with the patch file…)

have a nice weekend!

…which is still missing dependencies. :wink:

That module is provided by libcanberra-gtk2.

You’ll need gnome-themes-extra-gtk2 which is an optional dependency of gtk2.

The Debian control file lists the following dependencies:

Depends: xdg-utils, libc6 (>= 2.35), libcairo2 (>= 1.6.0), libgdk-pixbuf-2.0-0 (>= 2.22.0), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.12.0), libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.24.0), libpango-1.0-0 (>= 1.22.0), libpangocairo-1.0-0 (>= 1.22.0), zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4)

That would translate to the following dependencies. Add a depends() array to the PKGBUILD:

depends(
  'cairo'
  'gdk-pixbuf2'
  'glib2'
  'glibc'
  'gtk2'
  'libcanberra-gtk2'
  'pango'
  'xdg-utils'
  'zlib'
)
