Trouble upgrading kernel from 511 to 515

Currently running 5.11.22-2-MANJARO (linux511)
I tried to install linux515 but it fails with error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) followed by a list of 3642 files – most if not all of the files in /usr/lib/firmware – and finally “Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.”

The following kernels are installed:

  • linux511
  • linux59
  • linux511-rt

The system is fully up to date via pacman -Syu before attempting the kernel upgrade. Do I have to uninstall 511 before I can instal 515?

Sure it is.

Reinstall your system, and next time read how to maintain it properly.

Sure… :face_with_peeking_eye: :arrow_down:

Reinstalling would be the easiest method to solve that problem for newbie.

Anyway all mentioned kernels are no longer part of the repo:

They are stable ones and go EOL (end of life) after about 3 months.

About the “conflicting files” issue. You need to overwrite them with the latest files:

sudo pacman-mirrors --geoip
sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack
sudo pacman -Syyuu --overwrite "*"

No, but if it is no longer available in the repo then it will be removed on an upgrade. So that a signal that you didn’t update for decades. Possibly an outdated mirror.

Also if you encounter the gpg verification problem, look here:

Thanks for your replies. I agree I have been negligent regarding the kernel, but for what it’s worth, after running

sudo pacman-mirrors --geoip
sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack

I see:

::INFO Mirror list generated and saved to: /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

and then:

$ sudo pacman -Syyuu --overwrite "*"
:: Synchronizing package databases...$ sudo pacman -Syyuu --overwrite "*"
:: Synchronizing package databases...
 core                                   167.1 KiB   960 KiB/s 00:00 [#####################################] 100%

:: Starting full system upgrade...
 there is nothing to do

Also, I neglected to mention earlier that when I attempt to install the 515 kernel, before the list of conflicting files I see this:

(4/4) checking keys in keyring                                      [#####################################] 100%
(4/4) checking package integrity                                    [#####################################] 100%
(4/4) loading package files                                         [#####################################] 100%
(4/4) checking for file conflicts                                   [#####################################] 100%
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)

so I don’t see anything that I recognize as a gpg problem, but then I also ran

sudo pacman-key --refresh-keys
sudo pacman-key --init

and then once again

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux515

with the same result as before.

What am I overlooking?

try

sudo pacman -S linux515 linux515-nvidia
inxi -Fza
sudo pacman -S linux515

gives the same result as

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux515

I didn’t try linux515-nvidia as I have no nvidia hardware installed (using Intel integrated graphics).
This is a pretty old box I’m playing with, as you can see from the output of inxi -Fza:

As mentioned above. Overwrite the conflicting files:

sudo pacman -Sy linux515 --overwrite "*"

Thank you. So that one command seems to be the entire solution.

sudo pacman -Syyuu --overwrite "*"

did not do it, but

sudo pacman -Sy linux515 --overwrite "*"

did.
Now after rebooting I see

$ mhwd-kernel -li
Currently running: 5.15.78-1-MANJARO (linux515)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux511
   * linux515
   * linux59
   * linux511-rt

I notice that linux511 was not uninstalled but I’ll do it manually after I’m sure that 515 is running OK.

check then

sudo ls /etc/mkinitcpio.d/*.preset
sudo ls /boot/
sudo ls /lib/modules/

remove theses old kernels

sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux511
sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux59
sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux511-rt

No surprises there. Before removing the old kernels:

$ ls /etc/mkinitcpio.d/*.preset
/etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux511.preset     /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux515.preset
/etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux511-rt.preset  /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux59.preset
$ ls /boot/
grub                                   initramfs-5.9-x86_64-fallback.img  memtest86+
initramfs-5.11-rt-x86_64-fallback.img  initramfs-5.9-x86_64.img           vmlinuz-5.11-rt-x86_64

initramfs-5.15-x86_64-fallback.img     linux515-x86_64.kver
initramfs-5.15-x86_64.img              linux59-x86_64.kver
$ ls /lib/modules/

5.11.4-1-rt11-MANJARO  5.9.16-1-MANJARO   extramodules-5.11-rt-MANJARO  extramodules-5.9-MANJARO

and after removing them:

$ ls /etc/mkinitcpio.d/*.preset
/etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux515.preset
$ ls /boot
grub                                intel-ucode.img       vmlinuz-5.15-x86_64

initramfs-5.15-x86_64.img           memtest86+
$ ls /boot/
grub                                intel-ucode.img       vmlinuz-5.15-x86_64
initramfs-5.15-x86_64-fallback.img  linux515-x86_64.kver
initramfs-5.15-x86_64.img           memtest86+
[jk@cool1 ~]$ ls /lib/modules/
5.15.78-1-MANJARO  extramodules-5.15-MANJARO

I had to remove linux-rt-manjaro also before removing linux511-rt.

I’m curious about this though … Manjaro allows to have multiple kernels installed yet there is only one /usr/lib/modules directory. Is it assumed that newer versions of the modules are always backwards-compatible with older kernels?

Every kernel has its own Directory

Newer versions of the same kernel modules replace older ones when updating
