Trouble connecting monitor to laptop via HDMI

The question

How can I connect an external monitor to my laptop

Description

  • my laptop has AMD integrated GPU and Nvidia discrete GPU, and the HDMI port is connected to the dGPU, I want to connect the monitor using the HDMI (the only available port on the laptop).

  • I tried optimus manager with the hybrid mode it sometimes works and sometimes the monitor goes automatically to power save mode.
    The last time the monitor worked fine I saved Xorg config, but after rebooting the laptop (without changing anything) the monitor does not work, I replaced the config with the one working but nothing happened

  • I’m done with that, I spent too much time trying to solve this and I have exams next week and a compitition, this problem affected my studying and my emotional state

  • I thought that prime will solve this problem so I removed optimus manager and installed prime but Nvidia drivers does not load

Hi @juba0x00,

What happens, and please post the output to the following commands, run from a Terminal
Emulator:

glxgears
prime-run glxgears

And

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

When posting terminal output, copy the output and paste it here, wrapped in three (3) backticks, before AND after the pasted text. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Sed
sollicitudin dolor
eget nisl elit id
condimentum
arcu erat varius
cursus sem quis eros.

Instead of like this:

Sed sollicitudin dolor eget nisl elit id condimentum arcu erat varius cursus sem quis eros.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby increasing legibility thus making it easier for those trying to provide assistance.

For more information, please see:

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

This :point_down:

…says there is no driver for the Nvidia card. And this:

…seems to confirm it. So let’'s see what there is to see. Please provide the output of:

and

Sorry for editing the last comment many times.
A quick hint, I don’t want to use prime specifically
I want to use an easy method that enables me to connect to the external monitor without suffering

Warning: No installed USB configs!

That looks right.

So I’m thinking it doesn’t get loaded because the AMD driver does get loaded and thus block that card, causing the other driver not to be used. So i’m going to have you try something. Let’s blacklist the built-in amdgpu driver and so causing it not to be loaded:

sudo echo "amdgpu" | tee /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf

Then reboot and see what happens. Report back with the output of:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

…again if there were problems.

Note: I have no idea if this will work or break things worse, so if it’s worse, well, then it wasn’t my idea!

Sincere apologies.

Just realized I made a mistake with the blacklist command. So remove that file:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf

And reinsert the correct one:

sudo echo "blacklist amdgpu" | tee /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf

And try again.

More info:

the desktop does not start after rebooting, I opened tty and executed
sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width > output
then removed amdgpu.conf backlist and rebooted the laptop

cat output

And the driver is installed, so I don’t know what the problem was…

If you’re willing to try again, see if anything happens:

  • Blacklist the amdgpu driver again:
sudo echo "blacklist amdgpu" | tee /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf
  • But this time, before rebooting, remove the drivers:
mhwd --remove video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime

and

mhwd --remove video-linux
  • Reinstall the hybrid drivers now:
mhwd --install ideo-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime

If this doesn’t work, well then I’m out of ideas so hold your thumbs, cross your heart and do a good luck dance while you reboot.

Prime was working fine out of the box before removing it, I can reinstall manjaro now, but after fresh install can you help me connecting the external monitor with prime ?

Well, I probably won’t be here to help. I’m in South Africa and my day is very close to ending.

But I’m sure someone else will be able to help whether to continue this debugging or after the reinstall if you still need help.

I will say this, though: if you reinstall, please use a new ISO image.

I reinstalled Manjaro with a new ISO image, the monitor does not work out of the box.
I have created this topic The Best way to enable HDMI port on hybrid graphics laptop

does ti work in the live usb?

No, it did not

so why installing it? …

try enable early loading:
kate /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
and edit the modules section to look like this:

MODULES=(amdgpu nvidia nvidia_drm nvidia_uvm nvidia_modeset)

save it and update it:
sudo mkinitcpio -P
reboot, and see if it helped

I installed it because I tried many things in the previous installation and the all the configuration files was messed up

  • Should I replace the line MODUELS=“” or adding a new line after it?
    I’m sorry for this silly question but I don’t want to make mistakes
# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES=(usbhid xhci_hcd)
MODULES=""

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()
<SNIP>

so was the monitor working previously, or it never worked?

change

to look like this:

save it and update it:
sudo mkinitcpio -P
reboot, and see if it helped

The monitor worked with optimus manager hybrid mode but after a day it did not work, but I didn’t change anything.

I rebooted the laptop after sudo mkinitcpio -P, The laptop booted successfully but the monitor still not working, should prime work out of the box, or should I configure something called prime offloading and these magic stuff :slight_smile:
