Tracker-extract never terminates, causing issues in nautilus

A couple of weeks ago I started having issues with tracker.

The process tracker-extract-3 runs indefinitely.

This causes Nautilus to hang if I start typing in the search field. It prevents Nautilus from opening a window if I don’t already have one open. The tracker3 status command also hangs, if I try to use it.
Killing the process solves the issues.

What I’ve tried:

  • Rebooting
  • Run tracker3 reset --filesystem
  • Run tracker3 daemon -t, delete ~/.cache/tracker3 and run tracker3 daemon -s
  • Run tracker3 reset -s

The process doesn’t use many resources:

mho 122605 0.0 0.3 862404 57148 ? SNsl 16:52 0:00 /usr/lib/tracker-extract-3

How to reproduce:

  • Kill any tracker-xxx processes
  • Do one of the following:
    • Search in Nautilus
    • Run tracker3 status
  • This will kick off the tracker-miner-fs-3 process (Is this supposed start every time?)
  • This will then in turn kick off the tracker-extract-3 process
  • Neither tracker-xxx process terminates and you have the issues

From memory this started a couple of weeks ago after there was an update to several Gnome packages. I can’t tell if it’s related.

Any information that can shine a light on the possible cause or solutions is much appreciated.

EDIT:
Just tested with my secondary user on the PC. That one has no issues. tracker-miner-fs-3 runs all the time and tracker-extract-3 shows up briefly and terminates normally. Nautilus works fine.
So it doesn’t look like a system issue.

Hi,

I too am having similar issues. Trying the above steps partially indexes files but seems to get stuck at about 21%. I can no longer search for files I used to be able to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Issue seems to be fixed since the last update.
