TOR Browser not launching following 2025-06-23 update

Everything went well and in good order. I just have one issue: I can’t launch Tor Browser anymore.

Doesn’t launch from taskbar, so I tried from the terminal but the application launch command “completes” rather than running until I close it. See below output:

user@host:~/home$ torbrowser-launcher

…and the process ends right there.

Here’s also some system info:

Thoughts?

I’ve moved your post to its own dedicated topic as it may get better attention.

Does the journal output anything usefull?

eg run journalctl --follow in a seperate tab/window

example as provided recreated: Tor works here on gnome altho unstable branch system, same startup output.

An option is to reset the cache/settings, start with a fresh profile.

1. Save (backup) your bookmarks.
2. Uninstall TorBrowser and nuke the entire directory from orbit.
3. Install a fresh copy, and restore your bookmarks.

Disclaimer: This may or may not solve the problem.

While running journalctl --follow, I’m getting this when launching Tor browser from the terminal (torbrowser-launcher):

Tiny bit confused now; is it an issue with Gnome? AppArmor? Also getting a segfault?

As far as I know, an AppArmor profile for Tor Browser comes with the Tor Browser package in the repos. I haven’t ever had an issue with Tor Browser’s AppArmor profile so I’m not too sure if it’s that. But I’m a bit perplexed what created this issue since this began right after the recent Manjaro update.

In fact, it might be my first ever issue after an update :slightly_smiling_face:

What do you think? Is your output any different?

Where are the bookmarks located? Would it be in a format that could be imported?

/home/user/.local/share/torbrowser? I see there is a directory under there called gnupg_homedir… is it safe having that deleted in the process?

Being based on Firefox, the method is identical;

Bookmarks (toolbar) → Manage BookmarksImport and BackupBackup

This exports all bookmarks to a bookmarks-YYY-MM-DD.json by default. Take note of where it’s exported to so you can easily find it again.

To restore; it’s the same procedure, only selecting Restore instead. You will be presented with a list of recent backups, but the most recent might not be as current as desired, so choose Choose file from that dropdown and navigate to the .json file you exported, instead.

If you don’t have the toolbar showing, you’ll need to find the dialog via TorBrowser’s menu system.

Yes.

Yes, it’s fine, TorBrowser will recreate it during install. The same applies if you use the downloaded version, as the package is effectively portable on all platforms; whatever is in the package is what you get.

I should note that after seeing the additional information posted, the issue is likely elsewhere, but at least you now know how to backup/restore your bookmarks.

Regards.

Thank you for explaining, but how would I do that when the browser refuses to launch :slightly_smiling_face:

As for the issue at hand, do you have any thoughts as to what might be going on?

tor browser is based on Firefox.

The same methods to save and restore files apply.

Inside that directory are more folders.

~/.local/share/torbrowser/tbb/x86_64/tor-browser/Browser/TorBrowser/Data/Browser/profile.default

Within it, there are the files that hold bookmarks, passwords etc. - just like in a regular Firefox profile.

places.sqlite
key4.db
etc ...

ls -l ~/.local/share/torbrowser/tbb/x86_64/tor-browser/Browser/TorBrowser/Data/Browser/profile.default
will show them all

Move ~/.local/share/torbrowser to somewhere else to save it
or copy it to somewhere else and then remove the directory
recursively.

A new one will be created.

Also remove
~/.config/torbrowser
and
~/.cache/torbrowser
as well

I just installed it:
sudo pacman -Syu torbrowser-launcher
and then started it via the menu.
It downloaded torbrowser (creating this directory structure) and launched it and it worked …

Thank you, I see my bookmarks there :slightly_smiling_face:. But are these in an importable format?

Also a quick update: I disabled the following AppArmor profiles:
torbrowser.Browser.firefox
torbrowser.Tor.tor

…and lo and behold, Tor Browser is launching and running normally again.

So the question is, what changed in the recent Manjaro update (2025-06-23) that prevents Tor Browser from launching with its AppArmor profile ? Bear in mind this AppArmor profile came with the Tor Browser package.

And it’s even stranger that (it appears) I’m the only one who has reported this issue as of now.

That is the way Mozilla describes the process of migrating a profile to somewhere else without losing anything.
Look it up.

I have done it dozens of times.

… importable format?
you literally copy the file, to overwrite one with the other of the same name …
function/result corresponds with file name

AppArmor:
I would not know.
Disabled and uninstalled as one of the first things after installing a fresh system.
I have never even tried to deal with it.

I like to keep things simple.

Hey, you wanted to know, and now you do.

Bookmarks are backed up fairly regularly; maybe twice a day (guessing) and a .json file is saved each time. They are listed in the dialog, as previously mentioned.

However, if you can’t launch the browser (even in safe mode) then you can still look through the directories manually till you find the one that contains many bookmarks-YYY-MM-DD.json files - the file with the latest date is the latest backup (in case it isn’t obvious).

Copy that somewhere safe to restore later, and nuke away.

Anecdotal:- TorBrowser launches without issue (for me).

What is that? :eyes:

I really only want AppArmor for Tor so disabling it isn’t quite the solution. I won’t mark it as resolved just yet in case there are answers or an explanation as to why the profile suddenly won’t work following the 2025-06-23 system update.

I’ll try to figure this problem out first but if to no avail, nuke away I will :slightly_smiling_face:.

Probably a typo - but he will know better.

Same for me.

And I didn’t explicitly disable AppArmor in my recent installation.
Manjaro minimal version - AppArmor at whatever was the default setting.
I think not active by default.

I’d never actively use Tor or the browser - this was just for the sake of trying and seeing …

A special startup mode that virtually every web browser has to allow starting without potentially troublesome elements, such as themes and extensions, for example. The actual branded feature name may vary from browser to browser, but it still achieves the same result. See whatever help system is offerred by individual browsers for specifics.
