Thunderbird missing max/min buttons?

So, Yesterday Thunderbird stopped displaying the min/max/close buttons in the top right.

I had been playing with tile managers and thought it may have been that, but now with everything back on default and half a dozen restarts, I’m still missing the buttons in Thunderbird. Any Idears?

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout appmenu:min,max,close
or
in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
gtk-decoration-layout=appmenu:min,max,close

i’m going off memory, so you might want to google to double check spelling/command.
