The screen freezes after the latest major update of the stable branch when running games through Proton. Window "focus"

Since the last Manjaro Linux update (KDE Plasma) few days ago, I’ve started experiencing issues with games using Proton. Every time I launch a game, if I don’t click or exclusively use the mouse, the screen freezes.

The game keeps running in the background — you can hear the sound, and even using the keyboard still triggers actions and menu sounds, indicating it’s responding. However, the display remains frozen until I click again with the mouse, at which point the visuals resume normally.

It seems to be a focus issue — like KWin (or whatever manages fullscreen windows) isn’t properly recognizing the game as active. This doesn’t happen in windowed mode, only in fullscreen or borderless windowed mode.

Anyone knows what could be the cause?

SPECS.
Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.13.0
Qt Version: 6.9.0
Kernel Version: 6.14.6-1-MANJARO (64-bit) (Tested with 6.12 LTS too)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 4800H with Radeon Graphics
Memory: 15.0 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor 1: AMD Radeon RX 5600M
Graphics Processor 2: AMD Radeon Graphics
Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
Product Name: Alpha 17 A4DEK

Monitor connected through HDMI.

Tested with Proton 9.0.4, Proton Experimental and Proton GE10-1 (in this case, using Wayland directly instead of XWayland server, same case). Tested with and without HDR.

Just to add something: I tried recording a video from the desktop to show the issue, but interestingly, everything looked fine in the recording — which is kind of odd.

Welcome to the Manjaro Community!

Could I suggest you post full system details (the Terminal command below removes anything privacy-related):

inxi -zv8

… copy the full Terminal output, paste here, highlight and click the </> button at the top of the reply window; this formats the text properly for the Forum.

Cheers

This is my thought as well. How about trying “Presentation Mode” to see if that makes any difference? (I doubt it, though). I’m getting a similar issue sometimes when playing fullscreen YouTube videos on my other machine.

N.B. In my case, not restored by moving the mouse, but I have to toggle fullscreen to get the “live” video stream back. No idea if it’s related, but I also use Wayland on Plasma.

Hello, BG405! Thanks for your welcome, and thanks for the help! Here’s the output of that command:

Answering your question, I did enable the Presentation Mode, but the issue is still present.
I also tried switching between windows, going back to the desktop, clicking back into the game, and toggling between windowed and fullscreen modes… I haven’t found any workaround to stop the game from freezing. It only happens in fullscreen mode, which is quite odd.

Same issue exists here. I tend to update about a week or so behind when things come up and just got to it. When I initially started Squad via Steam Native with Proton Experimental, game was unplayable. If I was Alt Tabbed into another window, the games background graphics played fine. Once I clicked back in, it stalled entirely. I tested it with all the in game settings I could manage, all resulted in the same. Ran it against 6.14 Kernel (I’ve been on 6.12 after some previous stuttering issues with 6.14), same issue.

Once I switch to Steam Runtime using any version of Proton, issue isn’t present. The games FPS is lower, enough so that I could notice it, but it’s more than playable. I didn’t test this against 6.14 yet, but on 6.12 it works. I did take note that when running in Fullscreen it causes some weird tearing during map changes and if I alt tab out, the game appears squished to a smaller resolution but generated as if it was the full resolution, otherwise Windowed and Borderless work as expected.

I recommend to you both, to switch to X11 and try it again… i wouldn’t be surprised if this is a Wayland problem.

I’ve changed to X11 to test this issue and yeah, it doesn’t happen on Xorg… definitely a Wayland issue with fullscreen.
