Hello everyone, this is my first post on the forum. We’ve been hearing a lot lately about what a breakthrough the COSMIC desktop environment will be, especially for laptop batteries and RAM management. Since I’m not an advanced user, but I’ve been using Manjaro with pleasure for many years, I’d like to ask more experienced users what version of Manjaro to choose, and then install the COSMIC package available in Pamac (GNOME??) Specifically, I’m concerned about avoiding conflicts.
- From what little I know and what I could (very) quickly gather, COSMIC is it’s own desktop environment.
- From what I see in the pictures, it seems based on/very similar to Gnome.
Based on point 1, I don’t think it really matters.
Based on point 2, I’d say Gnome. But the case could al be made in favour of using the opposite of Gnome, something like Plasma,
All that said, Cosmic is made by System76. So I’d only realistically expect those big enhancements on System76 hardware, to be perfectly honest.
More info:
There is not yet an ISO with Cosmic preinstalled. However some community members created some spins of Manjaro:
I realize that creating and maintaining another spin is time-consuming, but I hope that the Manjaro Cosmic spin will appear once all the testing by system76 is finished.
This:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/COSMIC
looks like it is fairly easy.
Use any Manjaro flavor -
if you use Gnome (which I’d do if I where to try it) -
remove all the gnome packages,
then install Cosmic.
Use a dedicated user account for testing it.
There is also cosmic-greeter to replace GDM.
Hi there, and welcome… nice to see a long-time user step into the limelight.
Cosmic is certainly an exciting topic right now and certainly conflicts are something to worry about… even with a separate HOME directory.
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/playing-with-cosmic-alpha/175385 ok - so here’s Hanzel’s journey, using unstable and installing cosmic…
‘Cosmic on Gnome’ - a kind of gnome extension. It’s possibly an interesting new toy for GNOME users to look forward to playing with, not sure if it’ll prise Plasma out of my hands just yet.
- Timeshift is your best friend; I’d even consider switching to rsync to an external drive.
- Expect some problems - experimental and bleeding edge as it is.
- Let us know about battery life and RAM management.
As for talk of a Cosmic spin… certainly not for a while… but if it really starts taking off, I’d say it could well come.
At the moment, these are purely theoretical considerations on my part, so weak that I will not give up on Plasma either ![]()
This is what I did on a machine that I do not depend on for critical stuff:

Hello. Unfortunately, the link doesn’t work.
“# Oops! That page doesn’t exist or is private.”
edit: I’m too fresh ![]()
If you are logged in it does …
It does not if you are not logged in or use private browsing.
If you mean Hanzel’s link, that is in the Member Hub, and you need trust level 2 to see that. I think you are at trust level 0, because you just joined. Stick around, contribute, and you’ll move up the levels ![]()
It’s exactly as Phemisters wrote, my account is too new and doesn’t have sufficient permissions. I’ve been browsing the forum for about 7 years, but I’ve never had to register because Manjaro has always worked reliably, or if a minor problem has arisen, it’s already been noticed by others and a solution was already there. Well, maybe with the exception of my Brother 1110 printer, which I can’t get to work ![]()
Thank you all for the replies and information. I think this thread can be closed.
Ai Ai cap’n!
As an aside:
There is a driver for the printer in the AUR:
$ pamac search 1110
[...]
brother-hl-1110 3.0.1_1-3 AUR
Brother HL-1110 CUPS Driver
So feel free to try that:
pamac build brother-hl-1110
