The Spring Festival is approaching, and on behalf of Manjaro, I would like to extend my warmest New Year wishes to you! We sincerely thank you for your continued support and trust in the past year. 2025 is the Year of the Snake. The Lunar New Year is on January 29 and the celebrations end with Lantern Festival on February 12. The auspicious festival of Lunar New Year is celebrated with pomp by East Asian communities around the globe, especially in countries like China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Vietnam, and Korea. It is also one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture. The festival marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Lasting 15 days, the Lunar New Year ends with the Lantern Festival, also known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day. During that time most of us will head back to our hometowns to celebrate these events with our friends and families.

Together will make the upcoming year a success. Till then …

Additional Info

Python 3.13 info

:information_source: You will need to rebuild any AUR Python packages that install files to site-packages or link to libpython3.12.so.

Print a list of of packages that have files in /usr/lib/python3.12/ :

pacman -Qoq /usr/lib/python3.12/

Rebuild them all at once:*

pamac build $(pacman -Qoq /usr/lib/python3.12)

Use rebuild-detector to see if anything else needs to be rebuilt:

 checkrebuild

* It’s recommended to clean your build cache first with pamac clean --build-files

Critical rsync security release 3.4.0

2025-01-16 - Robin Candau

We’d like to raise awareness about the rsync security release version 3.4.0-1 as described in our advisory ASA-202501-1.

An attacker only requires anonymous read access to a vulnerable rsync server, such as a public mirror, to execute arbitrary code on the machine the server is running on. Additionally, attackers can take control of an affected server and read/write arbitrary files of any connected client. Sensitive data can be extracted, such as OpenPGP and SSH keys, and malicious code can be executed by overwriting files such as ~/.bashrc or ~/.popt.

We highly advise anyone who runs an rsync daemon or client prior to version 3.4.0-1 to upgrade and reboot their systems immediately. As Arch Linux mirrors are mostly synchronized using rsync, we highly advise any mirror administrator to act immediately, even though the hosted package files themselves are cryptographically signed.

All infrastructure servers and mirrors maintained by Arch Linux have already been updated.

Partial Cinnamon 6.4 updates

Linux Mint is currently preparing Cinnamon 6.4. The Arch Maintainers went ahead and released some Cinnamon packages which got already tagged 6.4. However, it seems this will break your installation of your Cinnamon desktop. We will monitor the situation and might downgrade to 6.2 packages if needed, before we do a stable branch update. Your feedback regarding Cinnamon overall is highly appreciated.

Known issues so far:

What you can do:

  • Ignore all cinnamon updates when updating.
  • You can try the newly added cinnamon-git package to see if it improves the situation.
  • Update: The issues are resolved with cinnamon >= 6.4.0-1. If you manually installed cinnamon-git, you may now install cinnamon again.

KVM default behavior change on module loading in kernel 6.12

In kernel 6.12, KVM initializes virtualization on module loading by default. This prevents VirtualBox VMs from starting. In order to avoid this, either add kvm.enable_virt_at_load=0 parameter into kernel command line or unload the corresponding kvm_XXX module. Initial support for 6.12 kernel series was added with Virtualbox 7.1.4.

More info about that in the Linux mailing list

Previous testing threads:

Had to solve a problem with pamac-cli (exits in file-system).

Hi, after this update I started seeing segfaults crashing xfce4-terminal and whisker menu:

kernel: xfce4-terminal[1930]: segfault at 40 ip 0000760260dbe02b sp 00007ffded96ec00 error 4 in libgtk-3.so.0.2416.32[1be02b,760260c70000+3b5000] likely on CPU 9 (core 1, socket 0)
kernel: wrapper-2.0[1648]: segfault at 40 ip 000078127fbbe02b sp 00007ffef2a9a440 error 4 in libgtk-3.so.0.2416.32[1be02b,78127fa70000+3b5000] likely on CPU 13 (core 5, socket 0)

Tried reinstalling gtk3 but segfaults kept reoccurring, typically within a minute of opening xfce4-terminal. Timeshifting back to before this update stopped the segfaults.

If I’m not mistaken this is Afrikaans, indeed not a language that according to your locale settings should be used. And can confirm that I have the same issue on unstable.

pamac-cli 11.7.3-1
libpamac 11.7.2-1

Same version as on unstable?

If there are issues with pamac, please report issues here. Also note the exact cli and lib versions you have issues with. Remember there is the GTK4 and a GTK3 version of pamac.

I have reset the Arch sync packages to the Archive snapshot of 26th of January. This will downgrade the following packages from core and in extra/multilib.

Those who are affected should do a sudo pacman -Syyuu and report back if that fixes things.

After updating to Virtualbox 7.1.6 the start of a Windows guest with VBoxSVGA and activated 3D acceleration leads to an error. Virtualbox 7.1.4 worked OK. Disabling 3D-acceleration solves the problem.

Whats the status about testing and the roadmap to stable?

As long as there are any serious blockers — which is what this thread is for — the software (and its dependencies) causing the blocking will not be pushed to Stable. Considering how tightly integrated the system is, this could mean that it may still take some time before the next Stable update.

If you do not wish to wait that long, then you can switch to the Testing branch itself.

sudo pacman-mirrors -a -B testing && sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syyuu

Notes:

  1. -Syyuu only applies to this specific occasion — normally you would use -Syyu.

  2. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can use the same command — but with testing replaced by unstable — in order to switch to the Unstable branch.
