TeX Live package reorganization

Starting from version 2023.66594-9, TeX Live packages have been reorganized to mirror upstream collections. Even though the new texlive-basic replaces the old texlive-core, many of the texlive-core contents (including language specific files) are now split between different packages. To find out which Arch package contains a specific CTAN package, you can use the tlmgr utility, eg.

$ tlmgr info euler | grep collection
collection:  collection-latexrecommended

which means the euler CTAN package is contained in texlive-latexrecommended. You may also use pacman -F to query for specific files.

A new metapackage texlive-meta is available to install all subpackages (except for language specific ones), and the new texlive-doc package provides the full documentation for offline use.

OpenBLAS >= 0.3.23-2 update requires manual intervention

The openblas package prior to version 0.3.23-2 doesn’t ship optimized LAPACK routine and CBLAS/LAPACKE interfaces for compatibility. This decision has been reverted now, and the ability to choose a different default system BLAS/LAPACK implementation while keeping openblas installed is now provided to allow future co-installation of BLIS, ATLAS, etc.

The default BLAS implementation will be used for most packages like NumPy or R. Please install blas-openblas and blas64-openblas to make OpenBLAS the default BLAS implementation, just like the old behavior.

Unfortunately you will get errors on updating if you currently have OpenBLAS installed as the default BLAS implementation:

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: installing openblas (0.3.23-2) breaks dependency 'blas' required by cblas
:: installing openblas (0.3.23-2) breaks dependency 'blas' required by lapack

Please append your preferred default BLAS implementation to the regular -Syu command line to get around it. For example:

sudo pacman -Syu blas-openblas

or

sudo pacman -Syu blas

Python packages built against python 3.10 can be rebuilt with the following:

If you have a lot of pip/AUR packages to upgrade to Python 3.11, read this.

If you installed python311 from the AUR, you need to uninstall it before running this update.

Many applications (firefox, thunderbird, etc) slow to start on desktops other than Gnome

There is a bug with xdg-desktop-portal-gnome (more details here).

If you installed the base-devel package group prior to this date, explicitly re-install it to get the new base-devel package installed on the system:

The php packages have been updated to the latest version 8.2. In addition to this, a new set of php-legacy packages have been introduced. These will follow the oldest but still actively supported PHP branch. This enables users to install the latest version but also introduces the option to use third party applications that might rely on an older version. Both branches will be kept up to date following our rolling release model. php and php-legacy can be installed at the same time as the latter uses a -legacy suffix for its binaries and configuration files.

In addition to this, the php7 packages have been removed as they reached end of life. The imap extension will no longer be provided as it relies on the c-client library which has been abandoned for many years.

VLC crashes when playing a video file

It looks like there has been a regression introduced with the new version of libva (2.17.0), which is used by VLC media player. If you get the following error when executing vlc in a terminal:

libva error: vaGetDriverNameByIndex() failed with unknown libva error, driver_name = (null)

you may try to change the Output option in Preferences > Video to VDPAU output instead of Automatic (or whatever value it had been set to before).

Downgrading the libva package from 2.17.0-1 to 2.16.0-1 may also work, but it is a more short-term workaround that should not be kept for too long, as sooner or later, the older package won’t be compatible with the other packages. Consider to do the solution above first.

dbus-x11 was installed out of the box on some flavors of Manjaro as of a year ago, but is no longer needed. If you have it installed, please replace it with dbus using the following:

sudo pacman -Syu dbus
XFCE becomes unusable if libxfce4ui-nocsd is still installed

XFCE Classic project became obsolete with the 4.18 series and is no longer required. If you still have it installed, please replace it with the normal package:

sudo pacman -S libxfce4ui

The python-cairo package prior to version 1.23.0-2 was missing the compiled python module. This has been fixed in 1.23.0-2, so the upgrade will need to overwrite the untracked pyc file that was created. If you receive this error

Since then we have been actively cutting down the number of projects depending on python2 in our repositories, and we have finally been able to drop it from our distribution. If you still have python2 installed on your system consider removing it and any python2 package.

If you still require the python2 package you can keep it around, but please be aware that there will be no security updates. If you need a patched package please consult the AUR, or use an unofficial user repository.*

Everything went smoothly, but i notice smth strange: pamac gui and the manjaro settings->kernels show i am on kernel 6.4.1.
But in terminal, both mhwd-kernel -li and uname -r show me 6.4.0-1-MANJARO ?

The new Linux kernel v6.4.1 is producing intermittent white screens on an AMD 7950X with an integrated GPU. Rolling back to v6.4.0 or sticking to v6.1.x LTS solves the issue.

Problem reported at Slower boot time after linux-firmware update still continues.

if amd-pstate=active , you will use amd pstate epp ( with 2 modes scheduler for perf and power )

with amd-pstate=passive , it will be the old one ( only one scheduler )

I’m having issues with graphics with 6.4.1-1.0 - gnome does not come up (looks like it is trying to fallback to X11 and fails) and I have to reboot with 6.3.11 (where gdm starts on wayland flawlessly). Please note this is on a Nvidia optimus setup (i7-8750H with UHD Graphics 630 + Quadro P1000 Mobile), I use nvidia-exec to manage optimus.

I don’t know if it was the Kernel update or mesa downgrade (23.0.4 from 23.1.x) today, but I’m no longer experiencing games (especially) freezing/crashing while in a KDE Wayland session (no crashing in X11) with my logs being spammed with more errors than I cared to post (usually ending with something with lines of Kpipewire_logging). I thought it was my 7900XTX, but same was happening on my daughter’s Acer Spin 3.

Yes I had pushed some more updates to this one. upstream changes: core, extra, multilib, overlay changes: core, extra. Also downgraded Mesa to 23.0.4.

pamac doesn’t seem to be able to successfully install anything this afternoon, but states otherwise (Transaction Successfully Completed pop-up appears, the same apps appear available to upgrade). I had a similar issue that I fixed by reverting to libpamac (11.5.4-2)

Oh that worked, but I tried just downgrading to libpamac-11.5.5-2 and it worked fine—ironically I tested it by upgrading to libpamac-11.5.5+1+g4bdc56a-1 latest as per Testing Branch. I expect I’ll be updating via CLI next time, until this is fixed, or downgrade again. Thanks

There is no pacman gui. You probably mean pamac and its been reported and discussed in numerous threads, including the Stable Announcements thread you should probably be in.
