Techole Aluminum USB Ethernet Adapter Splitter

I bought this ethernet adapter: USB 3.0 Hub - Techole Aluminum USB Ethernet Adapter Splitter with RJ45 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Network LAN Port - 3 Ports USB 3.0 HUB -Type C Adapter but it seems to freeze my Dell XPS 13 after a short period of time (reproducible).

I would like to find out why this happens but not sure how to go about doing that? Please can I get some assistance on how to diagnose it. It seems to be popular model so not sure why it is not working on my system.

(I tried to post the Amazon link in this post but when submitting the post it says I can’t have links in my post)

I looked in the journal and I see this message:

ModemManager[901]: <info> [base-manager] couldn't check support for device '/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4': not supported by any plugin

Also this is the product description from the Amazon site:

It says it only supports Kernel 3.x and 2.x but that can’t be right or is out of date.

I think I might need to install r8152-dkms from AUR

Correct me if I am wrong, but this seems to be the adapter you are using right?

Yes I think so. Because when I removed that adapter and running mhwd again it doesn’t appear anymore. I installed that driver I mentioned from AUR but still no luck. It still freezes the system.

try this

first run:

sudo mhwd -a usb free 0200 //if it is still showing as 0200 Ethernet controller.

see if that works

then:

sudo mhwd -a usb nonfree 0200

When running the first command I get

Warning: No config found for device: 2-1.4:1.0 (0200:0bda:8153) Network controller Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8153 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

Get the same output for the second command as well.

I am continuing to look into this, but here are my thoughts so far:

  • A few things could be happening.
** You may need to add some things to your /modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file
** It could also be a power state issue of the card (very in depth. I got a taste of this yesterday).
** Also, could be something completely different from what I have seen.

I just peeked into the logs and I see this

Have you seen this:

ht!tps://www.pcsuggest.com/install-rtl8153-driver-linux/
^ remove !

I’ll give it a go.

Downloaded the latest driver. Hit the first problem:

make -C /lib/modules/5.8.3-2-MANJARO/build M=/home/me/Downloads/r8152-2.13.0 modules
make[1]: Entering directory '/usr/lib/modules/5.8.3-2-MANJARO/build'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'modules'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/lib/modules/5.8.3-2-MANJARO/build'
make: *** [Makefile:24: modules] Error 2

Try

make -j2

same.

Also what is weird is that when going to the Realtek website I clearly pick the 8153 driver but when it downloads it’s sending down the 8152 driver: h1tps://www.realtek.com/en/component/zoo/category/network-interface-controllers-10-100-1000m-gigabit-ethernet-usb-3-0-software

Try skipping to this part of the PCsuggest page that is linked above:

Add a kernel module rule

and make the file that it is talking about.

Because you know it’s already installed because it is showing up as the driver.

Also, at the beginning of the guide, they state that the 8153 uses the 8152 driver for some reason.
