Systemctl suspend permission error

Hi guys!

Yesterday, after the update, I noticed something strange: I can no longer suspend my computer, no matter which kernel I try to use. (From the two I’ve tried, one of which I know worked fine before the update because I used it daily.)

When I run it from my custom shortcut on the keyboard nothing happens, and it no longer appears in the launcher, making me think it’s some kind of permission problem.

And indeed, running:

$ systemctl suspend

…from the terminal, yields:

$ systemctl suspend
Call to Suspend failed: Access denied

I tried looking at some logs, but couldn’t see anything:

$ journalctl -u polkit.service -x -b

I checked, and my groups look fine:

$ groups
sys ftp log http games dbus network power sambashare lxd storage optical disk audio wheel mirdarthos roccat android-sdk

So I’m at a total loss, as those are all familiar errors. I don’t know why this is happening, or what to do about it, so I’m hoping someone here does.

Well, does anyone know what to do, or at least why this r happening?

Do you have an nvidia GPU? Are you using X11 or wayland?

I do, but didn’t think it’d affect this. However, I realize I might be wrong, so here’s my details:

$ inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width [sudo] password for mirdarthos:

And it works if you use ‘sudo’?

I have no issue with systemctl suspend.

Only a small difference between yours and mine is:

I do not have this rule file 99-manjaro.rules Where does it come from?

Check the output of sudo pacman -Qo /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/99-manjaro.rules

It comes from manjaro-hotfixes.

That came with Manjaro IIRC…

$ sudo pacman -Qo /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/99-manjaro.rules
/etc/polkit-1/rules.d/99-manjaro.rules is owned by manjaro-hotfixes 2018.08-6

Just tested this, and strangely:

$ sudo systemctl suspend
Call to Suspend failed: Access denied

No…

what says dbus?

One Terminal: journalctl -b0 -u dbus -f
Second Terminal: systemctl suspend
OR: systemctl suspend --check-inhibitors=no

Try to uninstall manjaro-hotfixes then reboot if it works?

If you have an Nvidia GPU, that must be suspended as well. I guess that for some reason it’s not suspending. I’m not sure how this works in the arch world, as I never had this issue. However, I had this problem in Fedora, this is why I’m suggesting it…

What is its content?

Not one single line.

$ systemctl suspend --check-inhibitors=no                                                                                                                                                                                                             1 ↵
Call to Suspend failed: Access denied

I know, and I had it running and working perfectly before the update yesterday.

Some hints:
systemctl status nvidia-suspend.service

Also you could try to force it (if it really doesn’t suspend)

systemctl start nvidia-suspend.service
systemctl suspend

Check if this is run on systemctl suspend via Wants or Requires (it should)

Nope. Made no difference. After reboot:

$ systemctl suspend
Call to Suspend failed: Access denied
$ sudo systemctl suspend                                                                                                                                                                                                                              1 ↵
[sudo] password for mirdarthos:
Call to Suspend failed: Access denied

Check which current packages that have been updated are causing the problem.
Use paclog with date for example:

$ paclog --after=2023-12-10

This did exactly what I expected it to do: suspend the Nvidia card, without suspending the PC, so I had a running PC with no graphics out and couldn’t do anything…luckily there was nothing unsaved…

Output here: https://0x0.st/H36L.txt

Just run journalctl -f in one terminal and then try to suspend. Any output?

My Nvidia suspend worked perfectly after following this:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA/Tips_and_tricks#Preserve_video_memory_after_suspend

And withy this error:

…it doesn’t seem to be related to Nvidia… (I say seem, because every- and anything is possible.)
