Some suggestions for the future

Use Btrfs as file system. It is rock solid. (Nearly unbreakable in the event of power outages or system crashes)

Use Snapper to create snapshots
It is more configurable than Timeshift. You can create multiple profiles for different subvolumes (/ /home /var/log …). So you can adjust it to your needs.
You can rollback each profile individually. Together with Btrfs I have over 100 snapshots of my system and no space problems. -
You even can combine Snapshots with extern backups (backsnap)
