System lag, extremely slow on external monitor

I just got a new Dell G15 laptop and installed Manajro. All is fine except if I attach an external monitor, and close the laptop’s lid than the whole system is laggin, everything is extremely slow.

If I use both monitors (the laptop’s and the external) everything is normal.

I found this thread: Stuttering and Laggy monitor on "External Only" mode but I am not sure if it solves my problem, and I do not know how to " replace gdm with this patched version : gdm-prime".

  • Kernel 5.13 is EOL so please install both 5.4 and 5.10 LTS (Long Term Support) and see which one of the two troubles you least.

I’m on KDE, not Gnome, so I can’t tell you what to do exactly, but closing the laptop lid is like pressing a physical button, so ensure that “Close laptop lid” in your Gnome settings is set to “do nothing”. Even when you set it to do nothing; the screen will still turn off to save battery, but the computer will continue working at normal speed, whereas it now sounds it’s going into toem form of sleep mode.

Thanks, I will do them.

I installed the 5.4, 5.10 and 5.14 kernel, and upgraded all drivers and software.
Since than my external monitor does not even detected with any of the kernels.

I don’t understand… Now none of you monitors are recognized?

Warning: No installed USB configs!

The laptop monitor is working fine, the external HDMI monitor is not detected.

Looks like you did many actions at once: besides kernel versions, you upgraded drivers and software.
Now it is harder to recognize which one exactly cuts the external monitor.

  1. If to switch to 5.13 kernel back, then does the external monitor works again (with notebook’s lid opened)?

  2. Also I can’t find the monitor model (it is just for general info, I do not know what it can brings).

  3. Try to change HDMI cable to quality one (or expected as non-broken), also test on lower length of HDMI cable (having 2 meters max). May be it could clarify something.

  4. Does the external monitor still works with other device? For example smartphones having USB-C port usually can send screen picture via USB-C - HDMI cable. May be you have some other HDMI sources to check with the monitor.

  5. Re-check power supply of monitor and input port selected. Try suggestions from monitor’s user manual.

  6. do you have any other HDMI display? TV, other one external monitor, etc. (may be to try a monitor of neighbors living close to you)? Do any other external display works with any current kernel (5.4, 5.10, 5.14)?

May be others have more valuable ideas, but meanwhile already posted ideas could be tried.

Unfortunatelly not. It does not detected with any of the kernels.

IT is an LG 23MP

It is a brand new cable, I am sure it is OK. I usd it only 3 days before the updates.

Yes, it is OK.

HDMI is selected

I will try it.

So it is not kernel-dependent issue, cause previously worked 5.13 now can’t detect it?

I had the 23MP55D from 2014 to 2021 (it brokes: 3 column of matrix became to be shown of solid color blue or red), it is off-topic, but in PM I can suggest you better and also cheap model.

I could changes the deal a bit: my model has no HDMI port, I used HDMI (PC) to DVI-D (Display) cable. But I used 1920*1080@60fps 5 meters fabric cable (solid, w/o adapters) which worked well.

So: cable OK, display show picture from other devices, so its HDMI still works, no port selection issues.

Probably it is not the case: it will not have the picture as it has no picture on definitely working monitor. So currently the issue mutate to sort of
“Unable to use HDMI port of notebook”

Does the port is dusty enough? may be to clean it and in further to use silicone anti-dust caps?

yep, the laptop port is clean. It is a new laptop, I use it for 3 weeks…

As laptop is new, and if the issue is software-based only consider to check newest kernel also 5.15-rcX
May be your new hardware is not completely supported by current complex used: drivers you installed + kernel + UEFI.

Also check your notebook manufacturer for notebooks’ firmware updates (UEFI) may be it changes something (example of that sort of another (irrelevant) hardware case: HDMI Firmware Update Tool for NUC8i3BE, NUC8i5BE, NUC8i7BE just as example, do not install it on your different configuration)

If that will not work, than need to review all HDMI port modes/settings.

Also you have journalctl logger helper on your PC. Already used all tips from it?

journalctl -b -p3
journalctl -b | grep -iE "hdmi|display|video"

or review all kernel messages

journalctl -b -k

and general

journalctl -b

logs.

Also consider to try live version. Execute:

journalctl -f

and connect and disconnect display to/from HDMI port. You will see log messages under the OS GUI hood. May be some of them could be used as tips.

I booted into an Ubuntu live USB and it detects the external HDMI monitor. Mirroring was working; however, on attach second screen mode I saw only (!) the mouse cursor, nothing else…

I updated my bios from version 1.3.1 to 1.5.0 but the monitor was still not detected.

journalctl -b -p3

I switched to Xorg from Wayland just in case, but the external HDMI monitor is not detected with any of the kernels.

As you connected the monitor to other devices and the monitor works, it seems to be the notebook’s HDMI port problem.

Since you mentioned on earlier OS state (5.13 kernel, older drivers, other software before update)

and tried

it seems it is not the notebook’s hardware problem and also you already

It looks like the OS software problem: some HDMI modes/settings . I do not know there they are and how much of them are available.

I ran out of ideas, but as I remember we have The knowledge base with easy access from almost any point of any modern town: if I were you, I would try to search through the Internet a phrases sort of:
linux notebook hdmi external display not detected
arch linux hdmi port modes settings
linux which modes/settings are available for hdmi port notebook
linux after update external display not detected/recognized
linux diagnose hdmi port work notebook
etc.

As all my other attemptm failed I reinstalled my whole system.

Now I am back to the original problem.
External hdmi monitor is detected, mirroring and using both monitors working well, but if I close the laptop lid the whole system is unusably slow.

I don’t know if you are still looking for a solution, but this thread may help, it seems that the problem is the hybrid graphics mode and the only solution, yet, is installing optimus-manager and using only the NVIDIA card Stuttering and Laggy monitor on "External Only" mode - #6 by Fabby
