System Keeps Locking Up

I am experiencing an issue where when I am using my computer, usually with a browser open, the system all the sudden freezes. Videos will freeze, the mouse wont move, no keyboard input works. I cant even switch over to a separate terminal environment. The only thing that I can do to remedy the issue is to hard shut down the computer. This has been happening ever since I upgraded my hardware to a new CPU, RAM, and motherboard. After I had upgraded, I did a fresh install of Manjaro. The weird thing is that when this happens, if a video is playing, even though the screen is frozen, the audio keeps playing and if I am in a video call, the other person can still hear and see me even though the system is completely locked up. Not sure how to fix this. I tried updating the BIOS but no luck, the issue still occurs.

Edit: Weirdly enough, I have never had my system lock up when I am playing a game, its only when I am using my web browser. It seems to happen when using any browser as I have tried multiple. It is never consistent in when it happens however, there might be days when this issue does not occur.

Could you create a new User account (for diagnostic purposes) and let us know if these crashes also occur in that account. This may help to rule out local configuration as the culprit.

Regards.

Will do! It might be some time for me to determine if things are working properly.

Logs can be an indicator of problems that might be contributing. When you next experience the crash, run the following command immediately after you login again; and post the output:

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 --catalog --no-pager

i had this problem and largely fixed it with going to wayland.

The OP is using Wayland.

I agree that Wayland is generally more performant; and I’ve personally never had an issue with it (used for going on two years).

But… many using (particularly older) Nvidia graphics are still experiencing issues from time to time. :man_shrugging:

I have been using my alt test account for a while now and do not seem to be experiencing this issue any longer. Should I just migrate to this account and remove the other one? Still unsure as to what caused this issue in the first place. If I ever do experience this lockup again, I will certainly use that command you posted.

I am using an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card. My CPU and chipset are also newer AMD architecture.

Likely a good combination with Wayland. I’m using RX 580 myself, with none of the issues often experienced by Nvidia users.

That there is no problem in a fresh account does infer that the problem is limited to your existing account.

While migrating to a fresh account may be convenient for you, it doesn’t actually solve the issue, and makes this topic useless as a reference for others who might have a similar problem.

In that case, the topic will be closed without a solution.

Whatever you decide (we are not judging), the choice is ultimately yours as the administrator of your system, and the sun will still rise tomorrow morning.

Let us know, either way.

Regards.
