System is not booting after recent stable update

First time posting here - just joined.. Forgive me if I have replied in the wrong place - I’m new here.
I’ve always just browsed around here for answers, and found solutions, in the past, solving my problems. so I never had to join before.
FYI I am just an end-user, a non-techie (I’m a musician), not a dev etc. I know just enough to add/change hardware components & install OSes with dual boot.
I have an old desktop system, soon to be updated next year, when funds allow, with Win10 and Manjaro KDE/Plasma on it. I had to reinstall Manjaro earlier this year when GRUB got screwed up and I lost access.
I just updated in the usual way, two days ago, with pamac-update, and it bricked my OS. It boots from GRUB, it does the starting up screen, and then one screen turns off, and the other screen goes black, with just a cursor in the top left. No access, and the TTYs (CTRL-ALT-Fx) does nothing either.
If I plug a USB in, I hear a sound, so the system is live, but no display. Hence scrabbling around for solutions/help. The vote above asks to post about it. So I am!
I have the old live USB from last time, and found some instructions on here to chmod my way in on btrfs, which I did successfully, and I installed plasma-x11-session as suggested here with pamac, and also installed GNOME just in case that helped. But no change when I rebooted. Blank screens and no TTY.
So my desktop is back on an old Win10 for now - just finished piles of updates, and I’m typing from a Debian laptop.
So, with my limited level of knowledge, am I looking at a reinstall from a new iso, at some point when I have time, or can it be rescued?
I’ve lost an entire afternoon already, trying to fix it - was supposed to be doing Spanish learning! And going for a walk, but it’s dark now.
Manjaro is fantastic, except for when it goes wrong - then it eats up loads of time.

mod. edit: created a new topic to address specific case issues

If you still have an USB key with the install ISO on it, boot it and manjaro-chroot into your system. Then provide from within chroot output of

# inxi -zv8
# fdisk -l

From within chroot, better change this:
inxi -zv8

to this:
inxi -czv8

else the output will look messy due to the misinterpreted color codes

Thank you - will do.
Takes some time to reboot my old desktop system & get in. Give me a moment. . .

[note to myself - manjaro-chroot doesn’t work; here is the link to the instructions to chroot in manually on btrfs, so I can find them again:

Thanks for the info :+1:

Apologies for the delay; this is a different computer - had to email myself the output!

[ An error occurred: Sorry, you can’t include links in your posts.]

I’ll have to go through and remove all links. . . .

You should be able to just copy/paste it and then highlight it all and use the symbol </> in the top row to format it.
There will be no active links in the output.

I was doing it from the live Manjaro USB using chroot on my desktop (this is a separate debian laptop, hence emailing it to here) - was no Windows involved at the time!

OK - will have to come back to it.
Hosting a zoom meeting in 50 minutes, and I have to go cook dinner first - will have to fix this tomorrow now…

Had to boot back into windows to set up the zoom.

Thanks for the help!

I have fixed this for you (@Nachlese)

you must have done something special to the output that you had to email yourself.
Probably windows line feed converted to how linux does it.

No. It is the same problem I had a few weeks ago. The formating of the output gets lost for some reasons. I am not sure why.

Here I would have preferred to read amdgpu. Radeon is a much older driver. Have you ever verified if the amd driver could be installed for your hardware?

You seem to have a (rather small) ESP, any idea why it’s not mounted?

I had the exact same problem. gdm was unable to start, due to permission issues. The cause was /etc/nsswitch.conf. There was a /etc/nsswitch.conf.pacnew that I apparently had ignored for a while. Using the new one (i.e. sudo mv /etc/nsswitch.conf /etc/nsswitch.conf.bak and then sudo mv /etc/nsswitch.conf.pacnew /etc/nsswitch.conf, so I can figure out the details later) solved it for me. I wonder why, though.

Apologies - I forgot the second request, yesterday!

Apologies - I only have a couple of hours free today - being picked up for a jazz band gig with equipment later - so I may have to come back to this over the weekend.

Mod edit:- Tidy of incorrectly formatted content. No charge.

I only have the one nsswitch.conf file - no .pacnew one, but thanks for the suggestion to look.

I did see a mkinitcpio.conf.pacnew, I don’t know enough about things to know if that is relevant or not, but I just swapped that one out in the same way you did for nsswitch, & I’ll see if that helps…

just replacing one with the other is never a good idea - not with .pacnew files

It might actually be causing your problem now.

fwiw: the nsswitch thing as a solution sounds highly implausible to me

No idea about the graphics driver - something I need to look into, which is a little beyond my pay grade & will require some figuring out. A job for the weekend/next week, when I have more time.

NO idea about that ESP.

I have new hardware - internal SS drives - that are incompatible with my old motherboard, so, in the next couple of months, as funds and time allow, I am planning a major upgrade. New motherboard, some new components, etc, whereupon I can install my new SSDs, and some fresh OS installs (at least 2, maybe Manjaro and Debian, as I am a little familiar with that one). My important data is on a separate laptop, and the desktop data on partitions readable by Win10.
I just wanted Manjaro not to break, until I got to that hardware upgrade point! And it broke!
I can put up with the dreaded Win10 until I upgrade, if necessary.
