System gets stuck very often

Since a few days my installation “randomly” freezes, and only way to get back to it is an hard button reset
It is not completely random since it appears to me that while using it freezes very rarely but it freezes almost certainly while in screen saver, not actively using the PC.

I already tried rolling back to 5.4 from 5.9 but it didn’t fix the issue

Only relevant system change made recently is that i installed Nvidia 390 proprietary drivers

Why use those old nvidia drivers, from what I see your GeForce 840M is supported with the 460.xx drivers. Also kernel 5.9 is EOL thus unsupported and delisted everywhere, use 5.10 which is LTS.

I rolled back to 5.4 from 5.9.

I will try installing 5.10

As for 460.xx i had them but i had trouble making them work properly, guess I’ll try again, thank you

  1. Please read this:

[HowTo] reboot / turn off your frozen computer: REISUB/REISUO

  2. Why? Because the 460.56 series supports your hardware…

  3. Apparently your problem is already solved. Just remember REISUB for next time…

:+1:

especially when they seem, from my experience, my tests, and other people’s, to not work correctly (they install correctly, you can boot properly, but there are issues) for example with 390 impossible to have a proper experience in web browsers (youtube plays video horribly, things like that) or games, when it works perfectly with the 340 (from philm semi official workaround for old cards) or 460 (from repos) drivers. I’m not saying these 390 drivers provided by Manjaro are broken, but I wouldn’t install that anyway.

off topic but while we’re at it:

kwin_xkbcommon: XKB: Couldn't process include statement for 'it(\0)'

delete the file ~/.config/kxkbrc (or keep it somewhere else) and go to KDE Settings, and make sure to select a keyboard variant, for example I had “French” set as keyboard, I changed it to “French / AZERTY” and after reboot the file ~/.config/kxkbrc is generated properly without that invalid variant creating issues. I noticed that for the last big Plasma update.

Not sure for your freeze issue, it could be whatever (hardware failure of some sort, BIOS issues, and so on), you need to dig a little I think and find a pattern for your issue.
