System freezes frequently

I came across 7 or 8 freezes today but I had no idea why it happend and how to fix it. Please, can anyone help?

Here is the log during the freeze (hard reboot at 21:55:32): paste

I see lots of log entries like Can’t update stage views actor… not sure whether it’s relevant or not.

  • Kernel 5.13 is EOL so please install both 5.4 and 5.10 LTS (Long Term Support) and see which one of the two troubles you least.
  • do an fsck of all of your volumes ( /dev/nvme0n1 and /dev/sda) from a bootable USB stick.
  • Are you using REISUB to reboot a frozen system?
  • For the future, always post an inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width as that would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

Thanks for you reply Fabby

  • I have switched to 5.10 now
  • I did fsck on /dev/sda and it’s fine. will get /dev/nvme0n1 tested when a bootable USB stick is available.
  • No I didn’t use the REISUB to reboot, because sysrq is not enabled then. Now it’s enabled.

I am not doing much work on this pc lately after the freeze. I will see if the TLS kernel will help or not.

Another thing you can try to see if it helps is to disable Active-State Power Management for PCIe.

It has practically eliminated video lockups and freezes on my Nvidia card using the proprietary nvidia driver. Not sure if it’s applicable to AMD and the open-source amdgpu kernel driver, but worth a shot!

You can disable it by adding the following option to your default GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT (located in /etc/default/grub)

pcie_aspm=off

Make sure to update Grub and reboot for it to take effect.

Thanks for you advice. I will try that!

Unfortunately I encountered a freeze again just now, with kernel 5.10 running.

The REISUB magic is not working and I have to do a hard reboot. Looking into the log I can see no obvious cause. But there are a bunch of warnings like:

Got any hint?

It could be a hardware problem. You should test your RAM with memtest.

If Memtest will be OK, you should try to use the pc with the Usb Live Manjaro (or other distro) long enough to be sure it’s not an OS problem.

If the freezes will not occur, at most just re-install Manjaro.

If the freezes will still occur, it would be a hardware problem (tipically a psu / motherboard problem).

Please read this:

because the more hard resets you do, the more damaged your / FS becomes and the more freezes you’ll have until it stops booting, so:
