Hi all, I’m very new to Manjaro, but I’ve been using Sabayon linux for years. I just bought an Asus TUF gaming laptop and installed a Manjaro on it as it was the only distro supporting the touchpad.
The video cards on the laptop are AMD Renoir and a Nvidia Geforce 3060. On my previous laptop, I had Intel and Nvidia and I switched between them with optirun. I tried installing bulblebee on this laptop but bumblebee wouldn’t start.
I installed hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime with mhwd but I have no idea how to switch between the video cards. So my question is is there a howto on switching between amdgpu and nvidia or if not, what is the preferred method to do it on Manjaro?
What I want for my laptop is to run on its amdgpu by default and to be able to switch to nvidia when I game or when I need cuda.
I’m sorry if I sound random, but it’s my first days with Manjaro so I’m still finding my way around. Thanks.
cuda
is completely unrelated, you can use that regardless of how the graphics stack is configured, provided that the appropriate kernel module is loaded and the necessary user space libraries are installed.
Then you should be able to run the applications of your choice with the NVIDIA GPU. E.g.:
prime-run glxgears
.
You can run
glxinfo -B | grep renderer
prime-run glxinfo -B | grep renderer
and observe the difference to confirm that it works.
Hi, thanks for replying. I get an error:
prime-run glxgears
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 152 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 25
Current serial number in output stream: 26
This is what I get when I use glxinfo
glxinfo -B | grep renderer
Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
OpenGL renderer string: AMD RENOIR (DRM 3.40.0, 5.10.30-1-MANJARO, LLVM 11.1.0)
But the system seems to know about Nvidia:
lspci|grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA106M [GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile / Max-Q] (rev a1)
05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device 1638 (rev c5)
That’s unfortunate, can you post the output of inxi -Gazy
and xrandr --listproviders
?
Yeah, sure.

You have optimus-manager
? In that case run optimus-manager --switch hybrid
, and prime-run
should work after that.
Nope, it doesn’t work.
ptimus-manager --switch hybrid,

Could it be something related to the kernel? I’m with 5.10.30-1-MANJARO #1 .
What’s the version (pacman -Q optimus-manager
)?
Please try the following: remove 10-optimus-manager.conf
and 90-mhwd.conf
from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
, and then reboot.
Well, it didn’t work. I removed the conf files, but I still get
optimus-manager --switch hybrid
ERROR: a GPU setup was initiated but Xorg post-start hook did not run.

Have you followed this when you installed optimus-manager
?
Because optimus-manager
recreates it. What’s in /etc/optimus-manager/optimus-manager.conf
?
Hi, thanks for the help. So optimus-manager.conf is empty. But I noticed your recommendation and did edit /etc/sddm.conf to comment out DisplayCommand
and DisplayStopCommand
and now I can switch to “nvidia”. So really thanks for helping me with this.
However, I noticed that when I use optimus-manager --switch hybrid and do prime-run glxspheres64, konsole claims I’m running the nvidia, but the FPS do not correspond to the Nvidia. Also in the vice versa, when I have switched to nvidia and do prime-run, I see higher FPS for the amdgpu that what I expect ( for example 200 instead of 145). Is this normal beahaviour?
When I’m in hybrid and start the nvidia with prime-run, nvidia-smi says it’s using the nvidia for the glxspheres64, but the FPS are 10 times lower than when I run on nvidia.
Well, I have never really analyzed the performance. As long as it’s enough for you, I wouldn’t bother messing with things. In any case, please open an new thread if you experience subpar performance.
