Suspend not working following Stable Update 2026-07-23

I experience quite serious issues with this update.

The update process had no problem. I ran it on Octopi and then reboot it successfully and everything appeared to work fine. After finishing my work, like always, I closed the lid of the laptop (an older MacBook Pro), which should send it to sleep.

Hours later, I took out the laptop, it felt warm, apparently it has been running, not sleeping. I plugged in the power, opened the lid, it showed a black screen. I tapped the power button, the screen showed a battery warning and the laptop didn’t start. I let it charge for about 10 minutes, then tapped the power button, thank god it started.

Then I tried to manually send it to sleep (from the menu), with the lid open, it went to sleep but without me touching anything, it came back to the login screen after about 20 seconds. I logged in, it didn’t connect to wifi. from the network popup from the panel, it showed looking for wifi but got no options. I tried to toggle off/on wifi from the popup, the toggle was not quite responsive, the effect came perhaps after 5 seconds after the click. Then it still finds no wifi. I logged out and in, wifi still doesn’t work. I had to reboot to get the wifi working.

Any suggestions on how to work normally as before: close lid → sleep, open lid → run with wifi.

BTW, when the wifi is working, toggling it off/on works as expected.

I suspect this is an issue with the kernel you are using now; this might get moved to that section if it is; this can be tested by trying another one e.g. linux618. Which are you using …?

Sorry, I’m not sure if the kernel before the update was the same. I had set the LTE kernel, 6.18, but am not sure if there is a minor update to it during the update.

It is definitely not the kernel. I have not yet applied the latest update, but have been experiencing this issue of suspend getting cancelled by itself. I run 6.12 LTS kernel. If it is helpful to investigate, the first time laptop stayed awake on lid close, I tried systemctl suspend and got the error that a 2nd monitor is preventing suspend. There was no 2nd monitor, but I noticed there was one old one still configured in ~/.config/monitors.xml so I deleted the file, and then suspend started working but I still get spurious wakes now and then (usually after a few days of uptime)

Sleep with lid closed had been working quite reliably for me for a long time, except perhaps some rare occasions in the past. There had been a notification sound when it got to sleep and a repeated notification when it didn’t. But in recent updates, that notifications disappeared.

BTW, I don’t have ~/.config/monitors.xml

same for me also, until last update. We are both running on Macbook 12,1 … so must be a some driver. I disabled bluetooth the last couple of days, and have not experience wakes since. But don’t know if it helps, because for me the wakes were always intermittent.

bluetooth is perhaps not a factor for me. Soon after every start, I toggle it off, pretty annoying it’s set to come on on every start.

@XJia’s issue is that suspend by closing the lid stopped working after the latest update. In your (@ohell) case however i don’t even understand whether you updated or not?

Yes, you have a somewhat similar MacBook. But you use different desktop environments. That’s why you had an issue with suspend regarding monitor configuration under Cinnamon I suppose and @XJia is using KDE Plasma. The latter got a major upgrade to 6.7.3 with the latest update and this could have caused @XJia’s issue with suspend which looks different from yours. If you would like to get support with your issue there should be a separate topic for this. We can’t support two different issues in a single topic – this will lead only to confusions.

@XJia Have you checked the energy options in the Plasma system settings?

Just a shot in the dark: Change this to sleep and apply to save the settings again. Although i doubt this will make a difference :man_shrugging:

hesitate setting that, as waking from sleep shuts off wifi, and the issue at hand appears not about closing the lid, but sleep itself, as it happens when manually setting to sleep with lid open.

Perhaps i don’t understand the problem.

What is the situation now? Is it perhaps close lid → not sleep? Or is it close lid → sleep as wished but whenever the system wakes up from sleep the wifi is gone? Or is it that the system wakes up on its own unexpectedly?

Then check what triggered the wake up with

Did a couple more tests, results vary:

  1. manually set to sleep, lid open, a bit later, tap a key, log in, wifi worked.
  2. manually set to sleep, lid open, a bit later, tap a key, log in, wifi stoped working, had to restart (I don’t know how to start wifi from command line).
  3. close lid on battery, with settings:
    on power, close lid → screen off
    on battery, close lid → sleep
    when sleeping, enter: Standby
    a bit later, open lid, screen came right on, apparently not sleeping, wifi worked
  4. close lid on battery, with settings:
    on power, close lid → sleep
    when sleeping, enter: Standby

redid tests 3 and 4,
3. close lid on battery, with settings:

a bit later, open lid, (wake from sleep), log in, wifi works
4 behaves behaves the same

retried a couple more:
manually set to sleep, lid open, a bit later, screen came on, log in, wifi stoped working.
manually set to sleep, lid open, a bit later, tap a key, log in, wifi stoped working.

redid test 4 a couple more times, some 10 seconds after closing the lid, the light on the back of the screen turns on, indicating screen is on, I login, and found no wifi.

when wifi doesn’t work, the following commands from the " Fixing Wi-Fi Connection" page don’t help at all:

@XJia I have the script below that runs on suspend resume. Note the logging I added to see which events are causing wake-up … but have not yet had a spurious wake after adding this, so no info yet. You might find this useful also. just save as executable file in /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/:

@jofi to clarify, I have not installed this update yet. I decided to join the discussion 'cos @XJia 's issue was same as the one I faced after last update. Also, I’m pretty sure that issue is spurious wake-up, rather than specifically anything to do with lid close. Because I was getting the same issue if I put laptop to sleep with systemctl suspend or even systemctl hibernate

also, as I mentioned, it has so far been OK once I disabled Bluetooth. But I have the wake even logger logging events now, will post here with wake counter outputs if I encounter the issue again.

Whether or not it is the same issue is unclear. It could as well be a different issue.

This is the point of the “Fixing Wi-Fi Connection Problems After a Suspend Without Rebooting”.

I think there are two issues. One issue is the unexpected wake-up. For this you could find out what triggered the wake-up by investigating the journalctl. I only gave an example command restricting the search to the boot session with -b, but since you can recall the time of the wake-up you can just go by the timestamps.

Now the other issue is the broken wifi after sleep. The article explains the reason for this and tells you how to prevent it. Please notice if the wifi comes up broken, I don’t think at this point it can make any difference of whether you interact with the networkmanager via the Plasma gui or via command line - it won’t help.

Rather either turning off wireless power management or trying to reload the wifi driver would be options I think.

I went through extended testing assisted by Claude. Disabled quite a few things, booted back to kernel 6.12, didn’t help: the sleep basically all wakes up after about 10 seconds. Now, not much time to test for the exact trigger, I ended up disabling every possible trigger with:

so only the power button wake it up. The sleep appears to hold.

For the wifi, I ended up with (similar to @ohell suggestion, thanks)

Without using the wifi script, these commands re-activate wifi after wakeup:

Now suspend and wifi appear to be working.

BTW, without touching anything on wifi after wakeup, sometimes wifi is up and sometimes not. Perhaps that suggest some kind of a race condition somewhere?

Perhaps one speculation on the cause of the issue:
in prior versions of Manjaro (or Arch), the settings of the triggers were provided somewhere (I don’t remember I set them when using Manjaro, I sure did that in the old days of using Ubuntu), then in this version they were somehow removed or overridden?
