Suspend/Hibernate Breaking

I’ve been having some issues with suspend not working with my system, which led me to distro-hop for a while to see if I could resolve it. I decided to come back to Manjaro/XFCE since that’s ultimately what I’m most comfortable with.

I’m still having this issue, but after spending a few days researching it, I have only managed to narrow it down.

Live USB: The suspend feature works perfectly fine as expected where my system gets saved to RAM and the PC shuts down to the expected low power state.

Initial Install: The suspend feature works here just as expected.

System Update: The problem occurs after I update the system. There’s the expected flood or packages that need to be installed, including a bunch of NVidia related ones. When I update everything, something causes suspend and hibernate to break. My guess is that it’s something that happens when I update the NVidia related packages specifically.

Observations: With suspend broken, the system dmesg/journalctl reports that the system has entered into sleep, however the system hangs and doesn’t go into the low power state. Power remains active, monitors disconnect and go to sleep, and nothing wakes the system (keyboard/mouse) and requires a reset to recover from.

Question:

How do I determine what is exactly breaking the suspend once I upgrade the system? If it is something to do with NVidia or the scripts that are provided, how to I change this to allow suspend to work again?

try different kernels, the 5.15 and the 6.4…
if it doesnt work, and you are forced to shutdown, provide logs from the failed suspend:
journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager

Start with:

journalctl --boot=-1 --no-hostname | sed -n -r "/Starting.+Suspend/,/Finished.+Suspend/p"

Well this is embarrassing.

I just finished up some things to setup for testing, went to suspend, and it worked flawlessly. I didn’t see anything that updated or installed since then so I’m at a loss for why it magically started working.

I feel like it’s cursed sometimes that causes random issues. I’ll keep an eye on it and then get more information if it happens again.

Maybe you update and didn’t reboot? Nvidia driver needs that. That could break suspend in case of nvidia, sure.
