Sudo: timed out - how to install without rebuilding?

After issuing this command:
yay -Syyu
I was asked to immediately entered my password.

I’ve left my computer compiling for 9 hours and now it failed to install qt5-webengine, and a few others listed below - notably blackmagic decklink kernel module aswell.

I’m wondering how to install these without recompiling thanks! (o:

im afraid to reboot right now as the kernel module wasn’t installed properly.

Thanks!

forgive my ignorance, but im guessing you are referring to a file that i should edit that’s probably in
/etc/
but I don’t know what this sentence means (o:

The package is still in the cache.

You should be able to install it using pacman -U

sudo pacman -U /home/resove/.cache/yay/qt5-webengine/qt5-webengine-5.15.19-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

To avoid issues like this - build all packages before you installation.

You may need to figure out the correct build order as some may be depending on other custom packages.

I have no idea - because I don’t know what you are trying to achieve - I cannot predict the result.

Perhaps you should install all the packages mentioned on the error line

But you are on thin ice here - it looks very much like trouble - especially the gcc14 part worries me as this is an important system component.

With knowing what your goal is - it looks like an army of

:high_voltage: :warning: :dragon: :dragon:

I would recommend that you also check to see if any of those AUR packages that yay is building are actually needed on your system. For example, qt5-webengine was removed from the repos last year, so no packages in the repos require it.

reiserfs hasn’t been in the kernel since linux613, so unless you have a drive formatted as reiserfs (is that why you are still on linux612?), then you can safely remove reiserfsprogs from your system.

To list all foreign packages (i.e. packages not in Manjaro’s repos) on your system, run the command:

pamac list -m

You can check each package’s dependencies to see if it is required by any other package with the following command:

pamac info the_package_name

For example:

pamac info reiserfsprogs

You should probably check for orphaned packages too. These are packages which were installed as dependencies of other packages which have since been removed from your system, or no longer require the orphaned package due to a change in dependencies.

To list your orphaned packages:

pamac list -o

Finally, when updating your system, you should always update the repo packages first:

sudo pacman -Syu

or

pamac update --no-aur

I don’t use yay, so I’m not sure of the exact command to run to skip the AUR when updating.

i need webengine*(edit) for stremio, im on 6.12 for blackmagic resolve’s decklink video card, for resolve studio, a few old external disks i need to access possibly for a film project were delivered in reiserfs, and i haven’t converted them for something else yet.

manjaro thinks there’s quite a few orphans, but i know i use those apps like cmake and some of these installed ones for dependencies for these programs i compiled myself

thanks for all that info though!

i’ll reference yay documentation for the rest - and start a new topic for a different graphics issue if it perists after this update.

If we split the above out in a a way we can understand - it appears you have all the necessary packages - you simply have to run the below command - pointing to all packages in one go.

:warning: :high_voltage:

Copy paste the command - should do the trick - but gcc14 is problematic and may cause interference with the system gcc.

Validate the result - I am still worried about the gcc14 packages since it interferes with the systems gcc - you are on very thin ice - perhaps you should ensure you are using unstable branch and run a full update before rebooting

:warning: :high_voltage:

Manjaro uses gcc15 - so you are about to wreck your system completely - I think you should reconsider what you are doing.

Thanks @scotty65 and @linux-aarhus

I did in fact pacman -Syyu before I did yay -Syyu

Sometimes the AUR either has not had packages I needed or been unreliable (a package I wanted wasn’t maintained) for me, so I just built and installed a few from the source, but some of the build scripts I’ve seen install dependencies, and while I would often try and manually look for each of the dependencies in the official repos or the AUR first, sometimes I couldn’t find them and had to manually install them.

Im really unsure how to parse all this information and understand how i’d go about fixing the installation as I can see a lot of stuff there in these lists that I’d need to have a system that does what I need, but I can also see a lot of bloat. I’m really unsure of how to proceed other than to move to a fixed release and build a static setup that works for video editing, and then giveup rolling releases for everything else I use? which usually means I can’t use it as the old static OSes like RockyOS that blackmagic recommends, that don’t support modern apps like the current versions of Signal Messenger or Element Messenger, or even playing back modern media files outside the video editing software.

I was able to use a slightly older kernel and still have a working workstation until recently, and now I am trying to play catchup with updates and not sure what to do with this specific system. The other systems dont have this issue, i just update them normally with add/remove software program and i don’t even think any of them have any foreign packages, or like 1-2 compared to this system.

Over the last 2-3 years that’s resulted in this mess:

The packages are already built, so if you ran an update again, yay will find the package and install it. Or you can manually install the package from ~/.cache/yay/<package-name>/.

idk how i missed this :woman_facepalming:

thank you so much for pointing this out too! this is almost more important that the solution to prevent it from happening again.

yay --help | grep sudo

Stremio has a flatpak version. In cases like these it is way more recommended than building qt5-webengine from source.

I would try to clean the mess if i were you, it will bite you in the posterior soon enough again. At least clean the orphans.

I would recommend to combine

$ sudo pacman -Syu
$ yay -Sua

in the future and not to update while you are away.

flatpaks and snaps almost never seem to work smoothly for me in Manjaro. I always get flashbanged by them with light mode, and they often require a lot of work to be able to just drag and drop files in to them as attachments, the experience was so frustrating I found it less frustrating to build webengine than deal with flatpaks and their permissions and flashbangs.

I know this mess of packages needs to be cleaned. I was authoring a post for guidance on that, but I don’t even know where to begin - there’s what I want to do with the machine, the current configuration, and then what’s now broken on it, as well as how I expect the broken bits to behave. This was an installation that was done in great haste while I was in a panic throwing together a working environment at all costs, because RockyOS wouldn’t let me install modern applications I needed to run, but was the only way to get support from Blackmagic for the Resolve Studio software and Decklink hardware at the time.

im debating starting over, but really dislike having to re-customize all my settings and use massive amounts of bandwidth to re-sync a lot of git repos like LineageOS, AOSP, and the ones in my AUR list there, I don’t have the disk space to have more than a mirror backup right now.

I think I might start an libre office calc file and chart all my dependencies and actually needed software and then when I’m done start trouble shooting my broken graphics configuration, as I’m also unable to use my nvidia card for encoding right now, and some apps just stopped loading like Resolve Studio.

Just feels super overwhelming right now - :anxious_face_with_sweat:
