There’s been crazy behavior lately. And it only seems to hit the 2nd seat.

1) Black screen while login (since sometime in 2022)

When the computer starts, there is a graphical login at the 1st seat. I log in and everything works fine.

The screen for the 2nd seat remains dark. But with htop it is visible that lightdm is active. In the 2nd seat, when I enter the password for the second user, the desktop is activated on the second screen and everything is fine.

I haven’t found a solution to this yet. So I live with that.

2) Random freeze on seat 2 (since sometime 2023)

When working on seat 2, the mouse and keyboard sometimes seem to disconnect, or the GUI seems to freeze. (But the programs stay active according to htop)
I need to end the xfce session from a terminal at seat1. Then screen 2 goes dark and seat2 can log in again.

This is not good because sometimes work is lost that way.

3) Random screen failure (for maybe 4-8 weeks)

When someone is working on Seat2, the screen goes black at a random time (as if you disconnected the monitor cable). Then after 1 to 5 seconds the screen will resume as if nothing happened. This happens at random times. Luckily not too often.

I was thinking maybe my hardware is starting to fail and I need a new graphics card for 2nd place.

4) Random logouts at seat 2 (for maybe 2 or 3 weeks)

The other issues still exist, but in addition, while you’re working, the screen may go black and you’re logged out. Entering the password will give you a clean new session :frowning:

This is very bad because work is lost that way.

In the logs i find:

journalctl --system --since -10h|grep nouveau  ✔

But i fear this is not the problem showing, but the re-login :frowning:
prior to these lines there is no indication of a problem

The question is how much random logout at this same period of Nvidia failure? 3 times logout issue?

I saw only 2 times,
7:53 seems to be 20 minutes after the boot. At that time no one was logged in at seat2 .

The 1st seat was on from 7:33 till now and had no issues at all. Not even a flicker. (but this are 2 separate nvidia-cards and the card for seat2 is the older one)

Because the screen is black while no-one is logged in, this may have been not visible
There was someone logged in, but this seems to have been only a “short black screen”

Thanks for your help so far. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

It seems i will have to investigate further. We will take a log on paper when something happens, so that we are able to compare with the system-log.

2nd seat mouse froze

I will create a log here. Every day a new post, and show what messages are in journalctl.

Have no idea, but did see some similar errors with nouveau + old NVidia card issues on Debian mailing lists and elsewhere:

https://linux.debian.bugs.dist.narkive.com/7yXQvv4r/bug-990662-nouveau-0000-01-00-0-firmware-failed-to-load-nouveau-nvd9-fuc084-2

https://linux.debian.user.narkive.com/MP69NDus/problems-with-the-nouveau-driver

Extracting the firmware for your older GPU and giving it to nouveau might be worth a shot as mentioned in those links. Someone also saw the same issue error on askUbuntu due to an OOM situation.

Good luck.

Now that I think about it some more, you’re very possibly getting that error right after your your blackscreen. In my head what triggers the error might be a GPU crash/reset, and then nouveau tries to reinitialize the card with firmware (which it doesn’t have) as part of the typical initialization process. Making the msvld init failed errors a symptom rather than a root cause…

Still likely worth a try getting them to go away though, just to exclude the lack of firmware image as a cause of your issues. My mental model of driver software I don’t understand might be completely bogus.

There are a lot of others i saw in the last months:

Most times someone would try to blame the craphics-driver (and this may in some cases have been true). But it happens to all sort of graphics-cards

I think it’s not the graphics driver itself, it’s the power saving issue. Why ?

It comes in a variety of flavors:

  1. A brief blackout of the monitor
  2. A longer blackout (until the mouse moves)
  3. A separation of mouse and keyboard
  4. A real logout (with losing the session)
  • It happens on random times (sometimes in a few seconds again, sometimes not in a day)
  • It is not related to any single program that is in use
  • It is not related to memory usage
  • It is not related to on-time

There is one program that I know of that does these tasks on a regular basis:

Energy saving !

An error in energy-savings could easily show the following behavior:

  • let the screen go black (screensaver)
  • disconnect the monitor (to let the monitor go to energy saving)
  • disconnect mouse and keyboard from the session (to prevent changing anything while in sleep mode)
  • end the session and logout
  • ( it could even start to shutdown)

I have all Energy-saving disabled. So how can i go on ?

What program could try to act in behalf of energy saving ?

Can you help me to debug who does this ?

2 random logouts are related to Nvidia issue, Nvidia triggered Xorg to finish seat1.

This error message appears when shutting down. You can ignore it.

But what can i do ?

  • Open a BUG-report at nouveau ? :hammer:
  • wait and sit out :man_shrugging:

(Wenn ich von nouveau wieder zu den nvidia-Treibern wechsle, komme ich wieder vom Regen in die Traufe / When I switch from nouveau to nvidia drivers I go from bad to worse again)

I am not Nvidia user.

You have two Nvidia cards. Try using other Nvidia card for seat1 if it reproduces the same problem?

For the first time we had a real dialogue after logout.

And it was the dialog you get when the screensaver interrupts your session. It was possible to give the password. Then the session was fully restored. :ok_hand: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

The only thing that is strange:

I disabled all hibernation/sleep mode/screensaver etc settings.

I think this is a strong indication to assume

That “Energy Saver” is the program that is going haywire.

Not the graphics driver. Even if the graphics driver is the one that gets hit (and sometimes produces core dumps)
