Stuttering and crashes after most recent update - NVIDIA driver problem?

I’m experiencing the following after the most recent update on my Lenovo T590, Plasma

  • When AC is not connected every 3-4 seconds the system hangs for a second.
  • Random crashes, very frequently (with and without AC). My system then freezes and the led on the caps lock key blinks - the same as if the pc would overheat (EDIT: it does not).

In my taskmanager I noticed that modprobe keeps restarting all the time and there’s always one CPU core at 100% every few seconds - could be those events are connected. In journalctl I get the following repeatedly:

I have no idea if this is related to the crashes and stuttering or what to do in general. I would be very thankful for any help.

the infos of the gpu are missing use the mandatory

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

Thats the same as they used … they just cut it off.

@pulga please show the full output.

inxi -v8zy covers all the things. Let’s use that from now on.

 -v, --verbosity
Set inxi verbosity level (0-8). Should not be used with -b or
               -F. Example: inxi -v 4
                   0 Same as: inxi
                   1 Basic verbose, -S + basic CPU + -G + basic Disk + -I.
                   2 Networking device (-N), Machine (-M), Battery (-B; if
                      present), and, if present, basic RAID (devices only;
notes if inactive). Same as inxi -b
                   3 Advanced CPU (-C), battery (-B), network (-n); triggers
                      -x.
                   4 Partition size/used data (-P) for (if present) /, /home,
                      /var/, /boot. Shows full disk data (-D).
                   5 Audio device (-A), sensors (-s), memory/RAM (-m),
bluetooth (if present), partition label (-l), full swap
(-j), UUID (-u), short form of optical drives, RAID data
                      (if present).
6 Full partition (-p), unmounted partition (-o), optical
drive (-d), USB (-J), full RAID; triggers -xx.
7 Network IP data (-i), bluetooth, logical (-L), RAID
forced, full CPU flags; triggers -xxx.
8 Everything available, including advanced gpu EDID
(--edid) data, repos (-r), processes (-tcm), PCI slots
                      (--slots); triggers admin (-a).

I dont know that process information is all that needed most of the time.

Nor is optical information, or device labels, or listed but redacted IP things, or CPU flags.

Certainly --nohost is redundant in the ‘long form’ above.

But I still prefer inxi -Fazy in general.

If the repo info is considered all that important then inxi -Farzy I guess, but I dont know if that is really needed all the time. :person_shrugging:

Sorry, I updated the output in the first post.

Here are the others:

In the meanwhile I also checked if my laptop overheats when it freezes - it does not.

There is no driver installed for your NVIDIA GPU. Please see Install NVIDIA drivers

Maybe not, however the more information the better.

It can be. If folks are using third party repos and it can be spotted right away, that could save everyone a lot of time.

Oh hey look, the OP is using a third-party repo. Not related to the issue at hand, however we never would have known otherwise.

These drivers are installed:

When running nvidia-settings it complains that there’s no NVIDIA driver loaded however (idk if it was like this before). I’m using the prime driver such that I can deactivate the dGPU. At least until last week this worked with bbswitch in combination with the GRUB-parameter acpi_osi=!LinuxLenovo-NV-HDMI-Audio (I already tried removing the parameter - it does not help).

I tried now removing video-modesetting and video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime and installing video-nvidia - it does not help. However when I remove all three of them (i.e. no graphics driver installed according to mhwd) the modprobe service doesn’t restart anymore continuously and the stuttering stops. From the power consumption reported in powertop it also seems that turning the dGPU off with bbswitch still works. Obviously I cannot run programs with prime now anymore, but I don’t really use it on linux anyway.

I guess this resolves the problem, thank you everyone.
