Stuck on grey login screen after boot

I seem to have the exact same issue as another user but I can’t post the link. the thread was closed after he made his comment.

after login it’s just an empty grey screen and I can move my mouse but not click on any of the elements at the top. if I try to open tty the screen just freezes but I can ctrl+alt+f1 and my mouse will start moving again. I have tried typing commands while the screen is frozen in case it’s just hidden but nothing seems to make anything happen

update: I can get into a tty by using ctrl+alt+f2 and waiting for my screen to go to sleep. when it wakes up I’m in the terminal

update 2: sudo systemctl restart gdm lets me login and everything works fine. but I still don’t know what the problem is

  1. Please read this:
    [HowTo] Provide System Information
and press the three dots below your post and press the :pencil2: to give us more information so we can see what’s really going on.
Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

Same issue as above. I hadn’t figured the ctrl+alt+f1 trick yet. But I had figured out the grey screen is actually active, and if I hit enter, my password, then enter again, GDM would log me in.

Then the damnedest thing happens. Gnome loads but with no top panel. But if I hit Meta/Win, I can see my dash. The fix I found was hitting my hardware button to sleep/unsleep… then the full UI loads.

It’s not an old install, maybe 6 months. But I’m a bad user who didn’t update for like 2 months, and this happened after that update.

Here’s the output of the requested command:

You could create a new user and log in as this new user (to test)

I encountered the same thing. I switched to using LightDM and my problems with GDM went away.

I’m not going to bother troubleshooting it anymore. I’ll return to GDM when Wayland is truly desktop ready. I give it another year or two.
