Stuck in login loop after failed update of Sublime Text

Hallo forum members,

I would appriciate help with my loginloop problem.

I have looked at entries concerning this problem and know that:
there is plenty of disk space
all dirs and files in my home dir are owned by me
I removed the .Xauthotity file
I deleted caches (pacman etc)
I removed pacman orphan packages

These measures did not help

I have the following information
inxi output
dmesg output
journalctl -p 3 -xb output
xorg.log output

I hope you can help me.

May just be related to bad update?

What can i do about it?

After a failed update of Sublime Text

How was Sublime Text updated?

What command did you use?

Check /var/log/pacman.log for messages pertaining to the Sublime Text update.

Is this a situation where you enter your userid/password, the screen flashes, and you are prompted again for your userid/password? Browse the journal for lightdm or the lightdm greeter.

I used the Package Manager and installed the updates sugested.

pacman.log has these entries for sublime:
installed sublime-text-4 (4.4126-1)
upgraded sublime-text-4 (4.4126-1 → 4.4143-1)
upgraded sublime-text-4 (4.4143-1 → 4.4143-2)

By the way, I tried to login as guest, same looping behavior. That seems to indicate that it is no fault in the home directories.

Updating sublime-text does not cause login loop.

I had issues with my system yesterday - it was the amd-ucode package which caused it.

It is an unlucky incident that it happens in connection with other system updates.

Only after @philm did a rebuild the amd-ucode package, my system was able to load the graphical session.

This is documented in the thread linked by @cscs - the amd-ucode caused a complete blackout with respect to a graphical session X or wayland alike.

That is good to know, how did you fix it?

I cannot say what you need to do - as I don’t know the state of your system.

My patience is very short when it comes to system issues which I cannot understand - so my troubleshooting process is not ordinary.

I am fairly confident you can fix it.

Even if you have blackscreen - you can boot into TTY - sync the amd-ucode package from testing branch.

Boot your system - hold Shift to get to the GRUB menu - press e to edit the entry and add the number 3 to the end of the linux command line.

Login and sync the updated amd-ucode package.

sudo pacman -U https://repo.nix.dk/manjaro/pool/overlay/amd-ucode-20230810.7be2766d-1-any.pkg.tar.xz

Thank you i will try that, seems to be esoteric knowledge

The kernel 6.4.6-1 on your system points to stable branch - and stable branch does not have the same issue with amd-ucode at least not in my testing yesterday.

I should emphasize that my system is on unstable not stable and I worked my way up through a new stable installation - then by trial and error worked my way through a series of sync to be able to get to the root cause.

All that work pointed me to the amd-ucode package - and knowing this the above is a possible solution - no guarantee though as I don’t know the state of your system.

too bad, did not help, but thanks a lot anyway.

But since you posted this in AUR - I reckon you have build sublime-text by hand.

Why didn’t you use the official repo? As described on their web how to - in short

curl -O https://download.sublimetext.com/sublimehq-pub.gpg && sudo pacman-key --add sublimehq-pub.gpg && sudo pacman-key --lsign-key 8A8F901A && rm sublimehq-pub.gpg
echo -e "\n[sublime-text]\nServer = https://download.sublimetext.com/arch/stable/x86_64" | sudo tee -a /etc/pacman.conf

I used the Package Manager and installed the updates sugested.

Switch to testing to use the 6.4.9 kernel

sudo pacman-mirrors -aS testing && sudo pacman -Syyu

Ran the command, restarted, no change. Do i have to tell the system to use a new kernel? If so how? I did not find a command for that from the tty.

Found out i am running kernel 6.4.9-1

still in the loop
