Stuck at boot screen

Hi everyone!

After updating the system through bmenu I can’t log in anymore and the boot stops at [ OK ] Started CUPS Scheduler. and all the tty-s are also dangling with a blinking underscore. In the updating process I might have overwrite or merged the .pacnew file. As suggested here I have tried:

manjaro-chroot -a
pacman-mirrors --fasttrack 5
pacman -Syyu
$ inxi --full --admin --filter --width 80

gives a service in loop of an app that I uninstalled long ago, but I can’t use systemctl in chroot to disable it.

I tried to provide as many info as I get gathering commands while searching for a solution through the forum. If you think something else might be useful let me know. Any suggestion is appreciated!

Thanks in advance. :slightly_smiling_face:

no one? :slightly_frowning_face:

try booting with different kernel if you have any installed…
and if mhwd-kernel -i doesnt work, use pacman:
sudo pacman -S linux515
or
sudo pacman -S linux61

I was not able to install any kernel and the tty were all dangling, but I managed to solve it. As I feared the problem was given by the fact that I merged / overwrite an old file with pacnew.

SOLUTION

  • Boot in a Manjaro Live USB instance.

  • Use manjaro-chroot -a to attach the current shell to your system.

  • Use bmenu to start the cli system managing utility.

  • Go to System Diagnosis > Pacman Log Search and type pacnew and find which file you overwrote / edited.

  • In my case it was /etc/shells which was missing /bin/zsh.

  • After copying the original file from the live USB installation I was able to boot again in my pc.

Moral of the story: Never blindly merge pacnews. Always review and compare changes
