Strange Problem with HP-Printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 8210)

The printer is accessible via the network (Ethernet), configurable, and fully usable at the lowest print resolution, “General Office Work.” As soon as I select a higher print quality, for example, “Presentation” or “Maximum DPI,” and even if I adjust the paper accordingly, the print job is correctly forwarded to CUPS and completed there without any problems. However, the printer doesn’t print anything, and no errors are output. CUPS simply reports that the print job has completed correctly. On the printer, you can see that it initially appears to be receiving print data, then the print head moves back and forth once, and that’s it.

No printout, no error message, nothing.

Deleting/reinstalling the drivers, CUPS, and HPLIP hasn’t helped. The printer is loaded with paper, the cartridges are original HP, and the low-resolution printouts show no signs of damage/defects to the cartridges or print head. As mentioned, printing at the lowest resolution works perfectly, even with duplex printing.

Internet research doesn’t yield satisfactory results, as it always refers to poor quality, which isn’t the case. The quality of the prints produced is good. However, the higher resolutions can’t be used, and no errors are displayed. Instead, it appears as if printing has taken place, but nothing is printed. CUPS and HPLIP are up to date, as is the printer firmware.

One perhaps important question:
Has it ever worked?

I can’t help - I don’t have a (this) HP printer.

Maybe the setting for higher resolution switches to some protocol, not supported by the driver. Like cups is still printing and sending pcl5 and the printer now expects pcl6 language (the example is not real but just to illustrate what i mean.
Or expects some proprietary header only supplied with the windows driver.

THX for your Answer and yes it did a few month ago.

@Teo
THX for your Answer. I’ll try to figure that out.

hi,

I am using a hp printer. Things i do to make it work:

pamac install --no-confirm manjaro-printer hplip-plugin avahi simple-scan
sudo gpasswd -a <your user name> sys
sudo systemctl enable --now cups.service;sudo systemctl enable --now cups.socket;sudo systemctl enable --now cups.path;sudo systemctl enable --now avahi-daemon.service

Then with cups go to your browser localhost on port 631 and find new printer.

Only driver i see is this one.

2025-04-21_06-28

I use simple-scan as a small tool for scanning so that’s optional.

Good luck

From your description it seems more likely to be an issue with the printer itself. I suppose, one way to test the theory is to try connecting the printer to another machine for comparison.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, but for Support purposes more in depth information is usually needed;

It’s best to ask your system directly. :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Highly Recommended
Technical Resources

Sorry for replaying late. Indeed it prints in high quality out of Windows without any issues. That is why I assume HP didn’t want support the Printer in Linux in full range. But this sounds and feels crazy especially there is a different behavior in other distributions like Debian or Ubuntu, which I don’t want to use. So may be the assumption of Teo is the right one and nobody noticed it until now. I don’t know!

May be there is somebody using the same Printer with Manjaro, so let me please know whether it prints in best quality settings on your computer.

THX

This has been corrected for you this one time only – in future you are expected to manage this yourself. Regards.

Just musing rather than much else…

Have you tried printing with different applications?

If your testing has only been limited to one application, maybe the issue remains only with that application. I realise this is reaching, but I dare say anything is worth consideration at this point.

Regards.

Interesting consideration, but so far I tried the Documentviewer, Libre Office and Only Office. This leads me to do some further tests with quiet remarkable results.
I opened a pdf file with the GNOME Documentviewer. This Doc has four pages and I tried to print it in “Presentation Quality” and using both sides of the page. The printer then moves the printheads only. That was all, no printout and no error message. Than I tried the same with the same file but previously converted into a PS-file with “pdf2ps”. After that it was possible to print the Doc (PS-format) out of the Documentviewer in “Presentation Quality” but then there is no double sided print out. Interesting! :expressionless:
