Strange case: Enter BIOS without even changing anything results in 'HALT&BEEP' state

Hello Manjourney’ers,

First time posting, but this special situation requires it.

So I have an Acer Aspire TC-885 8th gen i7 core.
It had Windows pre-installed when I bought it but the very first day I wiped everything away from a live medium…which resulted in much fun bending and curse’ing to get things eventually rolling.
I since opened my case front -literally- and replaced, added or removed HW along the way.

The problem I’m facing now isn’t one of losing any data or situation where I’m forced to re-install but it’s a nuissance which I can’t wrap my head around.

latest manjaro iso, stable branch, is installed and runs smoothly with kernel 6.6.
BUT whenever I try to do anything, albeit just having a look in my BIOS I can’t quit without my pc just making a Halt, stop there and start to start a continuous Beep.

The only way I can restart normal is pressing the power button until the pc shutdown and pull the power cord out of my case, smoke a sigaret, push the power button 30sec and the insert the power cord which makes my pc start normally.
Any other scenario and I can’t even reach bios boot screen, it just starts Beeping again.

So I’ll post my required system information and hope the manjaro community can solve this strange one.

Moderator edit: Fixed formatting

Thx Mod for formatting…I myself was doing it at the same time but you were the quickest

Well given that Acer seems to have stopped supporting that model in 2020 the first thing I’d try is an older kernel like 6.1 LTS or 5.15 LTS and see if the issue still happens there.

Will do with next reboot, which won’t be long since pipewire started playing up and being not deaf this is annoying to say the least.
Will report later…

EDIT: I thought that newer kernels were older ones with new stuff added.
Maybe a too simple thought but kinda difficult to grasp.
If someone would like to explain in a short understandable alinea…

Not just added, sometimes things are changed to work better at the price of requiring modern hardware. That’s why older LTS kernels are still maintained, to support hardware that doesn’t meet newer kernel requirements.

It’s also possible that newer kernels have newer bugs which only affect older hardware. In that case it will likely get fixed at some point.

I don’t know for sure that this is your problem but;

  • You have a problem which seems to be BIOS related

  • Acer stopped providing BIOS updates for that system in 2020

  • So the first step in solving your problem is to see if it is specific to the latest kernel or not

Good news people,

I dismantled my pc almost completly…removed some stuff, added some, cleaned it and screwed in some bolts that were originally to hold the outer case on the inner frame (where needed - thought having the pc look complete for the BIOS would matter) and behold…instant fix.
I even gained some UEFI capabillities it now seems.

Don’t know if this matters but I turned all options under power saving settings to disabled, even deep sleep power and restore to X state when AC power loss occurs.
VR and SYS fan disabled
Intel AES-NI left disabled and sha1sum aswell.

Don’t know if I did something that improves or decreases performance or disable any abbilty that matters but for now = OK!

I’ll provide some more logs for the interested
