Strange behavior when trying to modify battery status on Plasmashell

I’m under Manjaro + KDE Plasma + Wayland
My laptop have hybrid GPU Intel/Nvidia (RTX2060) and integrated screen + HDMI screen.
When I click on the battery icon, plasmashell freeze. I could use [Win]+[Esc] to display taskmanager and in processus, right click and send Kill signal. Then, plasmashell restart… still not able to click on battery !

Any idea how to debug? should I send a message to KDE?

Probably.

You haven’t provided much detail to work with. Please provide your system information as described (below) as this might encourage others to form an opinion.

I’m not aware of any similar issue.

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Of course, if that could help to troubleshoot.

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

It may be worthwhile to establish whether the issue is local to your user account. I suggest creating a fresh account to see if you experience the same issue.

Otherwise, I have nothing to add at this time.

Maybe only journalctl -f (without the restriction to -k) will show more relevant things?
or
sudo dmesg -w
?

Thanks @Nachlese I could see one event:

juin 13 17:32:59 Voyager plasmashell[1579]: qt.qml.signalhandler: Property 'onPressed' of object CompactRepresentation_QMLTYPE_1007_QML_1044(0x55f647cac780) is a signal handler. You should not call it directly. Make it a proper function and call that or emit the signal.

@soundofthunder Is it easy to create and remove a new account (under Windows, it leaves lot of files and registry keys) ?

Each Desktop Environment (DE) usually has it’s own GUI for handling Users, but Manjaro Settings Manager contains the most consistent (GUI) method across Manjaro editions.

I personally prefer the commandline;

1. To create “testuser” and the /home/testuser directory:

sudo useradd -m testuser

2. Create a password for “testuser”:

sudo passwd testuser

Note: There are many additional options that could be used, but for the purposes of this excercise they are unnecessary.

3. Reboot and login to the new “testuser” account which should now appear on your login screen.

4. When finished with the new account, reboot and login to the original account to delete the “testuser” account, like so:

sudo userdel -r testuser

This deletes the “testuser” account and removes the /home/testuser directory.

As all files belonging to the “testuser” account are contained within the /home/testuser directory, once it is deleted nothing remains. As is often said “Linux is not Windows”.

I hope this was helpful.

Regards.

Thanks a lot, I did it… but the result is the same.
However, I’ve found something interesting: I’m using powercpu-gui to control precisely how my processors works and it have 4 modes (don’t count default) where KDE battery only have 3…

Power is the intruder (when I’m in this mode, battery widget hangs plasmashell).

Now I’ve found a clue, i would to know what to do with this?

Maybe what you think is a clue leads you on a false trail - that is always a possibility.

powercpu-gui is a package built from AUR
Last updated years ago.

Maybe there is a better alternative switching power “levels”? - I think it changes the CPU governor uses, the strategy the CPU uses for power saving or efficiency.

First remove the cpupower-gui AUR package:

sudo pacman -R cpupower-gui

or

pamac remove cpupower-gui

Then reboot, and see if Plasma will now allow you to modify the battery status. My guess is that cpupower-gui is somehow conflicting with Plasma’s PowerDevil service:

I’ve removed cpupower and it GUI from AUR.
I’m not good with AUR or not: for example, it’s impossible to find Pinta in official package, or NAPS2 (a scanner to PDF manager really good and existing on Linux and Windows).
I’ve to avoid AUR or it could be use or just not official but great?

Removing cpupower was not necessary, just need to use only first three modes.
However, I’ve remove it because powerDevil seems enough. thanks a lot.

Using AUR is o.k. (my opinion) - often there is no alternative.
But:
you need to keep track of what you use - sometimes AUR stuff gets transferred to the normal repos - or the other way around.
If you are not aware of it, you can easily create potential problems for you.
For instance needlessly building AUR package from source while it is available in the repos …
