Still struggling with 30/8 updates

Hello everyone. After the updates supplied on the 30th August my machine refused to boot, went straight to a black screen no mouse, no tty - nothing. So I went back in with Tmeshift and got back to a working system and decided to leave those updates for a few day while I perused the Forum for any news. On the news feed tonight I noticed that kernel 615 was now EOL (I was on 615) so I deleted that and loaded 616 rebooted - all good. Tried the updates again and back to the black screen. I have retrieved my system with Timeshift again but is there any clue as to what’s happening? I’m running the open source drivers for my (very old) Nvidia graphics card - is there anything else I should be doing here?

Many thanks for reading this.

Martin

This might be related to items listed in Known Issues and Solutions, particularly, Grub gained security fixes. Updating it may be risky, or Grub - “Error: grub_is_using_legacy_shim_lock_protocol not found" may be worth looking at.

In the meantime, these might be of use;

When possible, please provide system information as described (below).

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information that may be useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8c0

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Mod note:- Manners are one thing; easy readability is another. Please remember to enclose all code or command output as preformatted text. See How to Post Command Output as Preformatted Text :eyes: :wink:

Hello again. I’m sorry I didn’t really understand the Preformatted Text instructions. :roll_eyes:

I’ve looked at the other solutions recommended and I don’t really see an option for me as I have nothing - literally just a black screen. So accessing anything of the system isn’t possible.

I have just downloaded the latest ISO - is my best bet to just re-install do you think? This is such a shame. In six years of using Manjaro this is the first failure I’ve had.

Regards,

Martin

No, only to see if the new ISO would boot, including all updates.

Other options:

You can also try to downgrade to mesa 25.1.9 can use this repo on top of [extra] in /etc/pacman.conf:

[mesa-251]
SigLevel = PackageRequired
Server = https://download.manjaro.org/pkgs/mesa

… using sudo pacman -Syuu

If that also don’t help, maybe it is the firmware ?!? Index of /packages/l/linux-firmware-amdgpu/

A newer set of firmwares can be found here:

[linux-firmware]
SigLevel = PackageRequired
Server = https://download.manjaro.org/pkgs/linux-firmware

Not quite. That is not the full output. Please try again. :wink:

Hello Yochanan, what other info do you need?

Hello philm, I’ll be trying the mesa change later tonight when I get home. Will the firmware list automatically update itself?

Thanks to you both.

You were given a link with the instructions needed. Rather than posting a rolling eyes emoji, you could actually read it instead, and you’ll know how to post code or command output properly as pre-formatted text, next time.

Your best bet might be to spend time in the forum and/or use the Manjaro Wiki to better understand how to handle unexpected issues as they arise.

The real shame is treating GNU/Linux as a Windows user might – reinstalling the OS rather than solving the issue. :facepalm:

Still, one thing reinstalling the OS has in it’s favour is that it can sometimes be faster than finding a solution. :slight_smile:

If you decide to take that route, please let us know so the topic can be closed accordingly.

Regards.

Still waiting for you to edit your previous post with the complete inxi output, as requested.

Hello, if I could understand exactly what the issue was I’d be happy to research it! Hence my approach to the forum. Also for your information I’m not treating Linux as Windows user might, I’m a keen but (obviously) less experienced Linux user than yourselves asking for guidance in an inexplicable circumstance. Now we have the sniping out of the way: according to pamac my version of mesa installed is 1:25.1.7-1 so does the advice to downgrade to 25.1.9 still apply?

I had the same issue at the last big update 20.7.25

This weekend I did the latest updated and was stuck after the Bootloader screen again.
I could fix it by using the live-usb and chroot in to it:

grub-update
grub-update() {
    # sudo grub-install --recheck && sudo update-grub
    sudo grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=manjaro --recheck --verbose
    sudo mkinitcpio -P
    sudo update-grub && sudo tree /boot/efi
}

And this time I did make a screenshot of the error output:
https://paste.c-net.org/EarthlyDearborn

I think somehow the mesa update to 25.2.x series nuked some older Nvidia cards out of orbit. Please downgrade to latest 25.1.x series.

You can try to use the 25.1.x series of Mesa via this repo. Simply place it on top of [extra] in your /etc/pacman.conf file and use sudo pacman -Syuu to downgrade.

[mesa-251]
SigLevel = PackageRequired
Server = https://download.manjaro.org/pkgs/mesa

If you have not access to a graphical session, you can go to the bootloader by pressing ESC key and select the bootloader entry. Press CTRL+E for edit and search for the words quiet and splash. Delete those and add 3 to the line. Then execute CTRL+x to start your session. You will land in a text console TTY. Login with your user.

Edit the /etc/pacman.conf with nano: sudo nano /etc/pacman.conf. Perform the downgrade and reboot.

Hello philm, well I’ve used your mesa suggestion in pacman.conf and added the firmware lines as well. I’ve also edit the GRUB lines as you indicated - I updated the system with today’s latest update and nothing much has changed. The only thing is I now get a flash of my desktop every minute or so but still no usable system.

Two things to be aware of…

  1. When replying to another member’s post, use the “Reply” button directly under the post you are responding to as this will ensure the intended person is notified.

  2. Please use an @ character when mentioning another member. Doing so generates a small modal list to select from, which not only prevents spelling mistakes, but also notifies the member that they were mentioned.
    Without the @ there’s (optimistically) a 50/50 chance that the member will know you tried to attract their attention.

My lighthearted comment was directed more as a reflection of the typical Windows userbase, rather than being personal.

As an inexperienced user, you might like to take advantage of the forum’s search functionality. The following link is a simple Search Query using boot black screen as keywords;

You might find something in the meantime that’s useful.

Regards.

Thanks for updating your inxi output, though I see nothing obvious that might be contributing.

However, I noticed:

Note that kernel 6.15 reached EOL two weeks ago, which means updates for this kernel are no longer available from the official Manjaro repositories.

It is strongly recommended that you switch to a supported kernel – perhaps kernel 6.12 (LTS) or kernel 6.16 – at your earliest convenience.

Did you try the proprietary Nvidia drivers yet? Maybe they are better on you hardware than the Nouveau drivers … You can try to use nvidia-driver-assistant to find the proper driver.

philm, I have great news! We are fixed :grinning:

There were some problems but I got there. Installed the prop drivers, rebooted and somehow lightdm failed to start. Went into a tty reinstalled lightdm and also changed to a LTS kenel and bingo! We are all good!

I would like to thank you for your helpfulness and patience. If there was ever an instance of learning from experience - this was it!

Sounds good.
