Steam (native) - getting system information crashes the GPU driver

As the title said - i tried getting the system information from it so i can update my protondb profile and report on a game, but each time, after getting it, the screen starts flickering, artifacting all over the place and i have to switch to TTY - where i get this output:

I know images are not “searchable” but too long for me to type it all out, sorry.

Basically, a bunch of amdgpu error messages. It’s like amdgpu driver is resetting or something, not sure.

I don’t need support for this - Steam works fine other than this, i just won’t pull the system information from it. I just thought i’d report this, but i don’t really know where. I know reporting this to Valve won’t do much, but i did it anyway.

But let it be here as well in case someone finds it useful.
Cheers!

After crash and reboot, you can provide the system information and the error message:

$ inxi -Fazy
$ journalctl -p err -b -1 --no-pager

Ah, cool! Here it is!

It looks like your hard drive is damaged or its cable is problem. You need to do backup and then check your disk first!

The GPU driver crash might be caused by data corruption from the disk.

Edit:

Is sr0 your DVD drive?

Can you try Kernel 5.15 if the GPU driver crashes again?

Since amdgpu and mesa is developed here:

xorg / driver / xf86-video-amdgpu · GitLab
Mesa / mesa · GitLab

Maybe it is similiar to this issue? AMD RX 7900 XTX gfx hang followed by HW reset (#7939) · Issues · Mesa / mesa · GitLab Anyhow there is a problem with the current mesa build with the amdgpu on the 7000 series. Guess it will take time to track down the problems.

Yes, i think so:

[ 2.447948] sr 4:0:0:0: [sr0] scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 2.449466] cdrom: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20

EDIT: Oh, i see the [sr0] up there now, yes, that’s my DVD drive then.

Since i have a custom kernel installed - xanmod - and kernel switcher doesn’t recognize it (xanmod was built from AUR cause it’s modified for Arch), is this going to cause problems? Also, because of other programs that rely on the kernel, maybe virtualization? Or is it safe to try?
Can i just make a system restore point in Timeshift, try another kernel, then restore back and it’ll go back to xanmod and all the settings i have now right?
Just asking before i do it cause i’d hate to mess my system up. :stuck_out_tongue:
Hope you understand.

No, the games work fine, and i have an older “GPU” It’s just Ryzen 5 Vega 7 chip, all in one CPU thing.
So anything affecting newer cards is probably going to bypass me.

Besides, this only happens when opening Steam system information collection. Nowhere else.

I just tested getting system info from Steam (native) on Wayland, and it doesn’t seem to have this problem.

Yepp that is exactly what happens on these bug reports, as I see.

  • Xorg gives you crashes , while wayland/xwayland works

I would argue that this happens because of steam deck. Steam Deck uses wayland and KDE + amdgpu driver and they just tested xorg not well enough. Maybe it is time to switch to wayland completely when using amdgpu…

Ah! That makes sense then.

I would switch to Wayland, and i did have it for a while, but random things start happening like, i can’t put the computer to sleep, the computer makes tons of error messages when restarting or shutting down, logout not working, programs starting long and a few glitches from some programs (though - those also sometimes appeared on X so maybe not wayland specifc issue).

I want to use it as it works smoother, and supports better vsync i think, the games don’t spaz out on Wayland like they do on X. And i don’t much care for stuff that’s missing, but it needs to work properly for the rest of the system. Both X and Wayland are janky i think, but Wayland ever so slightly more right now. But X is definitely showing its age, just now, randomly after last restart, Brave browser started flashing red every time you click on something, had to go back to Firefox, i mean… X is still the lesser “evil” but neither work properly right now i think… At least in my limited experience.

I’m not engrained in some X only ecosystem anyway, so i don’t really care which window manager i use. If i could make Wayland work properly, i’d use it over X, but i don’t know how to troubleshoot the issues it’s been giving me - especially since they appear randomly and basic OS functionality like logging out or sleep gets broken.

Well, I have not always the most modern systems, but a common, well spread one and buying second hand hardware, because of reducing electronic waste.

I use wayland with sway. xorg and wayland works as expected, so suspending and hibernation. So my wild guess is that kde does not set the gpu in sleep mode correctly or the function is bugged.

Anyway… try it with sway (or previous i3wm). If you can suspend and hibernate there, I would consider KDE has a problem here.

Just for reference... an old working laptop (almost 8y old)

Yes, it’s something regarding KDE probably, not sure. Like i said, Wayland behaves weird at times, but so does X, so idk what to make of it…

I’m not “there” yet lol, tiling window manager desktops are pretty foreign to me, and not really good for my workflow i think. I do a lot of work in digital audio workstations, and there, each window that opens, has its own GUI from a plugin, different dimensions, and i don’t need them all the time, tiling those windows constantly would be a nightmare, i need them floating. I know you can do rules for that in sway, but i really don’t need a tiling window manager… I doubt those programs would behave good with those, i either need them full screen, or unlocked panels so i can rearrange them as i need.

And since changing an entire desktop environment is quite an undertaking, i’ll be respectfully skipping this troubleshooting step just to see if i can put the computer to sleep under sway.

X works fine, if i get the time, i’ll troubleshoot wayland again, for now, it’s not my priority.

Back on topic though - i heard back from Valve support. They said i should install Ubuntu because anything except Ubuntu is not officially supported - not happening anymore, not going back to Ubuntu based distros.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

Steam for Linux is currently only supported on the latest version of 64-bit Ubuntu LTS with Unity, Gnome, or KDE desktops.

If you are running another distribution of Linux, 32-bit Ubuntu, or an older version of Ubuntu we will not be able to provide support. We recommend you install the latest version of 64-bit Ubuntu for the best Steam experience on Linux.

If you wish to attempt to run Steam on a different distribution or version, it’s best that you use Github to discuss them with our developers and other Linux users.

You can create a free Github account.

Once signed up and logged in you can visit our Github and post your questions directly to the Linux Community and our developers.

Best Regards

Doesn’t Steam Deck run on Arch base just as Manjaro? Just the ARM version or something?

Anyway, they did give me links where to “properly” report this so there’s that.

Well you said…

So you run all the time the native version? The “runtime” version preloads ubuntu libraries. That is the recommend way of starting steam.

SInce then i have tested runtime as well, it crashes too. It DID manage to not crash long enough for me to update my protondb profile haha, but beyond that, still the same. That reset also borked Brave browser i think, it started flashing red after that…

Runtime is recommended though? Didn’t know that, how come?

As already said… steam is tested with ubuntu libraries. Runtime preloads them and native ignore them and load system libraries anyway. However, as you could think, the steam deck uses also the ubuntu runtime.

Why is it recommended? Because libraries can change quite often on RR and therefore the runtime tries to guarantee a more predictable environment. So let’s say if there are 2 equal libraries, then it prefers ubuntu libraries in the runtime over the system library. Understandable?

Yes, thank you!
Native runs fine for now, but if i ever run into issues, i’ll use Runtime.
Both are crashing the driver when collecting system info lol, but that’s not a huge issue, i don’t need that anymore.

I do. :raised_hand:

However, I also have all the wine-staging optional dependencies installed along with wine-mono and wine-gecko to cover everything. I also use GE-Proton for all games. I rarely have issues.

I have those installed too. I use GE-Proton for Guild Wars 2, works great.
I mean, Steam Native works just fine for most everything, it’s just that one part of the client that’s apparently bugged. Oh well…

Hi!

I’m getting the same crash on my amd+nvidia notebook. I reported this on xf86-video-amdgpu’s gitlab.
