Steam isn't running after reinstalling

I reinstall Manjaro-XFCE after using KDE and to fix some issues I had with a previous install. One issue I’m having is that Steam won’t launch after starting. THis is what I get with Steam:

steam

steam.sh[4435]: STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
setup.sh[4509]: Steam runtime environment up-to-date!

So how do I fix this? Was working fine with the Manjaro- KDE install. What could be preventing the Steam Client from opening?

I tried with the Valve Steam Controller both plugged in and unplugged. But nothing. The Client is running but the application doesn’t show.

I did install the 6.3.5-2 kernel, but that didn’t changed anything.

@whm1974 - I think you may be having the same issue as me: Problems Getting Steam Running

Did steam --reset and still the same problem(s). I wonder if is something to do with Xfce as I was playing games this morning with KDE.

Have a look at the Github link at the end of my post - I think the package was updated recently and it’s now basically broken. It seems this issue has been reported on the Arch Wiki over the last week or so.

I haven’t been able to find any viable workaround - I have an existing Manjaro KDE install myself so I’m wondering if I can pull the older packages off of there and then install them manually on my new system and lock them (yuk).

What’s your GPU by the way? I’m using an integrated Intel Graphics card so if that’s a common factor that would tie in with the Github bug, I think.

This is me

Device-1: Intel Alder Lake-S GT1 [UHD Graphics 770] driver: i915 v: kernel

Steam will not display with Wayland. Had to install KDE and select X11 for steam to work properly.

You were using wayland with XFCE?
And … we are to infer that was the default?

As far as I can tell Wayland seems to be the default unless the user selects otherwise.

It appears XFCE did in fact add wayland support a few months ago.
Im still surprised it would be the default.
…actually. That support was added in 4.20 … which is not yet available in the repos.
https://packages.manjaro.org/?query=xfce4-session
Otherwise you would need to be using a(n added) wayland compositor:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland#Compositors

I checked my Thinkpad which has Xfce installed and you are not given a choice between Wayland or X11 at login which you have with KDE.

I wonder why the user isn’t given a choice here. I am under the impression that Wayland is suppose to run X11 apps.

XFCE it does not matter because it cant launch wayland.
I do not know what gave you the impression thats what you were using.
The only way for that to be the case would be if you installed a different window manager/compositor.

Just checking (as my own thread goes into “Alice in Wonderland” territory) - You weren’t using Docker, Docker Desktop, VMWare or VirtualBox by any chance?

Not that I know of. Moot now since I reinstalled KDE Plasma. I have to use X11 instead of Wayland with KDE, otherwise I can’t login. Are other distros having this issue with Steam or just Manjaro?

I haven’t been keeping up with the recent changes in Manjaro lately.

There’s a few things I’ve found that look very similar in the Arch Wiki and looking at the bug on GitHub that seems related, this was Arch too so I suspect that there’s a code issue Steam side that affects users on Arch based distros with certain setups.

The trigger for who suffers the issues and when seem to be quite obtuse though. I’ve found I can get reliable steam now by setting Docker Desktop to start on boot. Steam will start up quickly and reliably as long as Docker Desktop has been started before (whether it’s still running or not).

This suggests to me that DD kicks some kind of common dependency that Steam needs to run which, for some reason, Steam tries (and fails) to kick itself most of the time. If I had more in-depth knowledge on both packages or could figure out how to interrogate the *.dmp files I may be able to get more info on the causal root, but that’s a bit beyond me.

There are comments from users on the Arch Wiki suggesting that making sure flatpak is completely removed will fix the problem (Not often an option these days). This may be interesting though, as both flatpak and docker are containerised systems.
