[Stable Update] 2025-12-15 - Kernels, NVIDIA, Plasma, Cosmic, Firefox

We just worked out a workaround for this… after making a copy of the session file.

Take a fresh snapshot, then downgrade dolphin.

pamac install downgrade
downgrade dolphin

➤ dolphin -v
dolphin 25.08.3

Load the session, then save it as a bookmark folder.

pamac install dolphin

Restore Dolphin, load the folder.

I had the same problem with lightdm after trying to downgrade to 570xx through mhwd. Couldnt even go back to 580xx. After trial and error finally was able to solve it by removing the mhwd version and installing it again but with pacman command: sudo pacman -S linux66-nvidia-570xx

I would tend to say, that the major problem with this update is / was the Nvidia driver in almost all of its latest versions. I had other issues already within the testing branch, because the latest 580 release still has issues with missing WQHD resolutions on Pascal cards.
So far I did not encounter any issues on my AMD only system, but found a lot of complains from people with Nvidia cards - also on plain Arch or CachyOS - while searching for a solution to my above mentioned problem.

Thank you. After I repaired my system, a have managed to downgrade the driver.

As i understood, in my case the issue occured because

sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-570xx

installs something called “linux612-nvidia-570xx-open”. And after reboot the system cant find some nvidia modules.

sudo pacman -S linux66-nvidia-570xx removes linux612-nvidia-570xx-open and installs correct linux66-nvidia-570xx

P.S. I don`t know is it a bug or a proper mhwd behavior.

I am no expert on mhwd - we will have to ask the architect @philm

4 hours and pages of gcc sounds like rebuilding aur packages. This isn’t part of the official update process.

Now I’ve tried to find a solution for a week with now luck.

On start up, between Boot splash screen and Splash screen (or login screen) I get a second grub screen for a second, but it’s just an image I can’t do anything there.
If I actively choose an entry in the (original) Grub Menu it does not show up.
If I change to default Grub background this is what I see on the second screen so it’s not a static image picked up somewhere.

I also see a Grub screen for a second if login out, if I logged out go to tty and clear cache and log back in and again log out it is gone, but on reboot it is back again, so something must happen during startup.

If I have Grub hidden I don’t see it.

I Timeshifted back to pre 2025-12-08 upgrade and all is good but after a new upgrade it is back.
More of an annoyance than a mayor problem but I can’t pinpoint the problem, Grub or Plasma.

I just installed both this and the 2025-12-08 update on two computers, following the guidance. On an nvidia laptop (where I usually expect issues) it went smoothly, but on my mini-PC I had the Error: symbol 'grub_memcpy' not found problem despite having run both install-grub and update-grub. I was able to fix it without needing to chroot from a live USB by following these steps:

  1. Enter BIOS and reboot with a boot device override from UEFI OS to Manjaro
  2. Follow the remaining step in [Testing Update] 2025-11-19 - Plasma 6.5.3, KDE Frameworks 6.20.0, Firefox 145.0.1 - #3 by braveheartleo (essentially just sudo cp /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/core.efi /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI, creating the latter directory)

On subsequent reboots, the PC came back up normally.

The output of install-grub indicated the problem, but I didn’t heed this in time:

Warning: GRUB bootloader at '/boot/efi/EFI/Manjaro' was updated.
Your booted entry 'UEFI OS' is not the same as 'Manjaro'.
This may be a rescue ISO, but if not check your EFI boot priority.

On the nvidia laptop, I just had to set the default session back to X11 in the SDDM settings.

Probably neither of them, but plymouth instead.

Yes, could be but it doesn’t help me with the problem, or maybe if I don’t use splash in Grub. I want to remember I tried that to and did not see the second screen/image.

That second image is an echo of the grub menu, which still resides in your graphics memory when plymouth starts.

That make perfect sense, also explain I have had problem finding a source of it being picked from memory.

Thank you, I am just happy having an explanation.

Kernel 6.18 gives no sound on my Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH7H (Realtek ALC3287 / ALC257), 6.17 and 6.12 are fine [hint: workaround]. Restarting pipewire[-pulse] and wireplumber takes a long time and according to KDE volume control only changes connection to the sound server lost according to no audio devices detected, wpctl status is also stuck. Unfortunately neither dmesg nor journalctl say anything useful. Possibly missing firmware or something.

EDIT: Seems like generic 6.18 issue, the reports are mostly on Arch (derivatives), but 6.18 basically has audio regression in general, unrelated to codec.

After a few days since installing this update with the Nvidia 580xx proprietary driver, I notice that I have the panel, title bar, and sometimes whole windows flickering. And game performance inconsistent.

I tried downgrading to 575xx and then 570xx, and my three installed kernels (6.18, 6.17, and 6.12) would boot to a black screen with a white blinking cursor in the top left corner. I even tried

I even tried the trick listed in the notes for this update of uninstalling linux-nvidia-meta and linux-meta before removing the 580xx driver and then again installing 575xx and 570xx with the same results. Had to restore a time shift snapshot to get back to something working.

I don’t know what is different about my system that this is a problem, and would very much like to downgrade to a reliably working Nvidia graphics driver version.

Can you help?

Update went without errors, after installing x11 package and following the “install-grub” instructions. BTW the package “install-grub” had to be installed manually.

SDDM works, autologin sucessful with Wayland KDE.
Freezing after about 1min if you start Firefox / Youtube.

Resetting to KDE Plasma X11 in SDDM and the system is working like a charm!
