[Stable Update] 2025-09-26 - Kernels, NVIDIA, Systemd, LibreOffice, KDE Software

After this or previous update (can’t recall, I am rebooting rarely, once a week) the system reboot takes ages. Lenovo logo is on the screen for more than 5 minutes. Can it be caused by the update? My system works fast and well when it is finally loaded.

Mostly good, except that after editing the Apache config file to take account of the .pacnew and restarting it, the service failed with:

Apache is running a threaded MPM, but your PHP Module is not compiled to be threadsafe. You need to recompile PHP.

I couldn’t see an immediate fix, so I’ve downgraded Apache until I can find time to investigate further; I’ll report back if I find a fix. Though if anyone has an answer…

Maybe

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/60370020/apache-is-running-a-threaded-mpm-but-your-php-module-is-not-compiled-to-be-thre/63047802#63047802

and/or:

https://serverfault.com/questions/1118977/configuring-php-fpm-in-apache/1118980#1118980

I use the commands before the update, if necessary I repeat the next day and if everything is ok then I just update the system

pacman-mirrors --status
pacman-mirrors --continent

Thanks for the suggestion. A bit confusing though; one advocates disabling mpm_prefork and enabling mpm_event, while the other advocates the reverse.

Playing around with the three available MPM modules (mpm_event, mpm_prefork, mpm_worker) I see that mpm_event and mpm_worker both return the php error, whereas enabling mpm_prefork results in none of my virtual hosts’ documentroots being found. Very puzzling.

I wonder if, as it seems to suggest, PHP (presumably php-apache) needs to be recompiled against the latest Apache?

I doubt it. I think it has to do with those modules. I don’t know what, but I seem to remember also getting those errors a while back on my Ubuntu server, but can’t remember how I dealt with it, except that I didn’t recompile anything.

Everything OK. … Thank you.

Playing files in MPV (v0.40.0) gives me a blue screen (with audio)

OS: Manjaro up-to-date

Presumably an up-stream bug, the KDE Plasma System Monitor Plasmoid only shows CPU and swap use if the circular plot is chosen, the more useful bar just stays blank. Curiously, the memory monitor in that plasmoid still works.

I had to timeshift back to a previous release.

After update, GNOME kept crashing on me (black screen), not immediately, but after some time from login.

I tried rolling back mesa, but no luck

I had a similar experience on KDE. After a while my main monitor held the same image, while the secondary was still live. This persisted until the screens went black followed by the whole system restarting itself. I tried getting to tty but it seemed unresponsive. After that restart it seems to be fine?

Bluetooth doesn’t turn on no matter how many times I click on it.

Everything else seems fine

might want to take a look at Improving performance/Boot process - ArchWiki

To my understanding systemd-analyze blame is supposed to be pretty good at revealing which are the longest boot processes… giving you a place to start

Note: It’s probably sitting at the Lenovo image because you have splash and/or quiet or both in your boot parameters… check /etc/default/grub and inspect/change the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line.

If you do make a change, make sure to sudo update-grub afterwards… be aware that if you do this you will see walls of text each boot (similar to when you reboot/shutdown), but when something tosses an error or there’s delays in the boot with a counting timer it’ll be obvious.

The latest kernel, 6.16.8-1, crashes KWin and all my desktop applications when my monitors wake up. Switching back to the LTS 6.12.48-1 kernel resolved the issue.

Done, my previous post has been updated.

Then this is your best solution as long as the issue persists.

It seems this update reverted the --disable-shim-lock parameter for GRUB, giving me error: prohibited by secure boot policy on boot.

Putting secure boot in setup mode, running grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=Manjaro --modules="tpm" --disable-shim-lock (Documentation) and then following the sbctl guide got me back up and running with secure boot.

There was an issue with grub which created black screens on some older systems not having the latest TPM specs. The regression was caused by: commands/bli: Set LoaderTpm2ActivePcrBanks runtime variable - grub.git - GNU GRUB. We applied a fix to grub. Those who are affected need a recovery image to fix their installation via chroot: GRUB/Restore the GRUB Bootloader - Manjaro

mkinitcpio reported an error about grub. Unfortunately I was on the TTY and did not get the exact wording . Luckily I caught the error and did not reboot immediately after the update but did the steps below.

Resolution:
  1. sudo install-grub - This one complained about GRUB not being installed
  2. sudo grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda - Worked perfectly
  3. sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg - Worked perfectly
  4. sudo mkinitcpio -P - No error this time. Worked perfectly.
  5. A reboot and the system came up fine.

EDIT: Just went through my posts and seen that I went through this in August. Any way this can be resolved permanently?

Solved by using a different video output

For a list of available video outputs:
$ mpv --vo=help

I’m using xv
