[Stable Update] 2025-08-30 - Kernels, ROCm, Firefox, Steam, PHP

When I searched the Arch Forums I also noticed some reports of Black screen issues. Some say Kernel 6.16.1 was still OK. Since a lot of AMDGPU driver changes and other things got backported there might be some sort of regression. Older kernels may be found here:

Check via pacman -Q | grep linux6 which packages are installed and downgrade them with older versions. Extramodules need to match the kernel versions.

Or try to switch to testing branch which provides newer kernel builds with some regression fixes: Switching Branches - Manjaro

Also provide your sudo dmesg or/and journalctl -b -1 from your last boot.

Im actually think its more simple if i switch to a older Kernel.

But i also read from 1-2 user’s in the nvidia forum, that the new 5.80 nvidia driver should work with 6.12 also.

And that means for us, wait till it comes to the stable or switch to tested branch.

Edit:
@philm
(Btw. my CPU/iGPU AMD Tuxedo Laptop is running fine, both systems with KDE and mirrored home settings, only difference is Laptop is using Wayland instead X11. My Laptop still using LTS 6.12)

In the end it is a combination of Kernels, Mesa, and Firmware. Wonder which of that combination actually broke it for some AMD and Nvidia users …

On all 3 machines.

I also cannot boot with the latest installed kernel linux6.1 anymore. It hangs with this error message:

Sep 02 10:28:10 ray-b550 kernel: [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring sdma1 timeout, signaled seq=2, emitted seq=2

Sep 02 10:28:14 ray-b550 kernel: ------------[ cut here ]------------

I tried to downgrade mesa as suggested by philm, but to no avail. Firmware was already up-to-date. Unfortunately, I cannot install a newer kernel as suggested. I posted about it here

Luckily I still had linux515 installed, which boots fine. I’m trying to find a way to post journalctl and dmesg. I just failed doing so - too many characters.

I pushed some more kernel, extramodules and mesa updates … This will fix some AMDGPU regression, a mesa crash and add Strix Halo WebCams support for linux617.

This actually seems to have fixed it for me! It seems to boot normally and I haven’t noticed any errors so far.

Glad to hear that @galbi

I wasn’t experiencing any real problems myself but downgrading to Mesa 25.1.9 does fix the RADV performance regression that I reported here.

EDIT Was thinking about spending my evening doing a Mesa bisect to find the regression but first tried 2.3.0_devel. The regression doesn’t exist there either so I guess I’ll just stay on 25.1.9 until it’s fixed in an official release.

Seems you have the Arch packages of mesa still in cache. Those wont match my signature. So remove them and try again.

Clearing cache doesn’t seem to help, but is that what you were suggesting?

I had quite frequent random freezes of Gnome and wayland apps till the last update (I had to do a pacman -Syuu to downgrade some mesa/vulkan packages), but now it seems stable… I’ll put more info if something happens.

The strange thing was that when some app froze, pressing on the “quit” in the “quit or wait” dialog did nothing, and the app become zombie. I’ll try to get more info if it happens again…

Notice that before the last (double)update I did not have any problem with the system, always using kernel 6.12.

Even before these last two updates (where I still am), I found kernel 6.12 started giving me “page flip” errors related to my amdgpu when one of my two monitors stopped updating graphically… appearing frozen.

Early 6.12 had this issue, then it seemed to be resolved for quite a while, and now it’s returned. My solution so far has been to revert to LTS kernel 6.6… maybe this helps you?

I understand that we have a combination of potential sources of concern regarding kernel/driver, mesa, firmware, etc… but fairly consistently for me the issue resolves by going back to kernel 6.6; however, like I already mentioned, I have not yet installed this update nor the one just before it… too many potential issues.

Restoring Mesa 25.2.1-4 now …

Waydroid is back to normal with the latest update! Big thanks to you guys!

Everything went well, except for Flameshot, which still doesn’t copy screenshots to the clipboard. Upgrading from version 13.0.1 to 13.1.0 didn’t resolve this issue. I downgraded back to version 12.1.0.

just curious if you have wayland-protocols installed?

I noticed there are a couple related to image/capture…

/usr/include/wayland-protocols/ext-image-capture-source-v1-enum.h
/usr/include/wayland-protocols/ext-image-copy-capture-v1-enum.h

Yes, installed and reinstalled:

extra/wayland-protocols 1.45-1 (129.5 KiB 953.5 KiB) (Instalado)
    Specifications of extended Wayland protocols

The 2 files exist:
