[Stable Update] 2021-02-28 - Kernels, Plasma 5.21.1, Frameworks 5.79, Firefox, Thunderbird, Python

kde x11 session permanently stucks on loading animation for me, (kde plasma session crashes instantly, but it never worked, so it’s kinda no biggie).

Any info on how to debug this?

Boot is about a minute from button to desktop, allowing my password entry for login and keepass. The advantage of suspend is everything stays where it is, browser pages stay open, working on something, leave it open. Of course in the morning I press a key and within a second I am back and everything is ready.
I have an UPS so nothing is at risk, I reboot daily anyway as I have a testing partition which sees a lot of use too.
It may not be for everyone but it works for me.

Hello!

I used the workaround you posted and worked fine here.

But the downgrading steps are here: Downgrading packages - Manjaro Linux

KDE user. I’ve had a few issues after the update:

  1. The meta key no longer opens the start menu. I am unable to set it as a shortcut either, I can only configure meta + another button.

  2. The start menu is poorly responsive now. The time it takes to react seems to have increased, though I am unable to measure that. Sometimes, non-reproducibly, but frequently enough to be annoying, clicks on it are ignored, and a second click is required. It seems to happen more right after clicking on a program in the task manager.

  3. Icons in the system tray are too small now. This seems to be a recurring problem. I set icons to scale with panel height, but this does not fix the problem. They are about 50% of the panel height.

Does not work at my side because a combo is expected: (Meta +...) neither @Heavymetalpenguin94 works because of the same reason (Ctrl + Meta + ...).

STRANGELY enough when installing a vanilla manjaro in a VM, the Launcher (of whatever it is called) opens at pressing on Super. No way i’m going to completely reinstall my system.

Edit: Nevermind, I got it working by assigign Alt+F1 according to this thread.

Still weird that this pesty regression pops up every time.

The keyboard layout switching widget is no longer displayed on the lock screen. Add please.

Update without problem: many thanks Manjaro team

After this update, my laptop is much warmer, and the battery life went from 7h to 3h, so there seems to be somethig wrong with power management.
Internal temperature is about 65 degrees celsius, where it was at 38 before.
How can this be fixed ?

The Pipewire-Media Core Dumb error is back!

I knew that link already, but its not explain, who can deactivate it and who not, why should i deactivate it when i possible need it.

Looks like there is no real solution at the moment or?

gotcha. good you’re paying attention.

a minute really? have you tried systemd-analyze blame? i like a quick boot and a quick shutdown. bugs me if over 30 seconds with modern equipment. I have an intel i5 7600 with 8gb ddr4 ram and 500 gb ssd - so not the most advanced set up in the computing world. Even my old (built in 2005) macintosh G5 boots in 30 seconds or so.

I have removed snapd and the pamac plugin, I will see if that helps.

For me, the upgrade itself was smooth, however, I noticed a few problems after the upgrade:

  1. Syslog was being spammed with: data: <hex characters>
  2. Fan speeds for my GPU were no longer available, causing my fans to ramp higher than they should.

These two issues were fixed by downgrading powerdevil to 5.20.5-1.

More importantly, this update absolutely ruined my gaming performance. Cyberpunk went from ~90 FPS @1440p on ultra settings to ~20 FPS on any settings. Death Stranding went from ~100 FPS @1440p on highest settings to ~30 FPS.

Frametime and GPU usage were all over the place in both cases.

Checking pacman.log, I had community/mesa-git installed before the update, but it got removed in favor of extra/mesa. I tried reinstalling community/mesa-git, but was unable to due to a dependency on an older LLVM.

The problem was resolved by installing aur/mesa-git and aur/lib32-mesa-git, but now there are some significant stability problems. It seems if you have an AMD GPU, you’re out of luck for Linux gaming until there is an official release of Mesa 21.

Edit: At least if you have an RDNA 2 GPU you’re out of luck until Mesa 21, or until such time as community/mesa-git can be reinstalled.

I’m having a small problem with Plasma 5.21: I can no longer “send” windows to different activities:

  1. Start an application
  2. Right-click on the application button in Task Manager
  3. Choose Show in activities > (a different activity): nothing happens.

Can anyone using multiple activities in Plasma confirm this bug? Thanks!

Hi,
I experienced it once but it gone after a reboot.

Unfortunately, it is not my case: apparently it is a persistent problem. Thank you for sharing.

It works fine for me on Testing branch with Plasma 5.21.2.

You could have a look in powertop and then you can see what’s consuming so much energy.

Have you tried downgrading powerdevil to 5.20.5?
