Since the update to Plasma 6, I have an ugly rotating square when I log in. How can I fix this?
Dont use the buggy breath splash.
I have seen this before - it is caused by iconsistencies in your system packages or an incomplete update.
sudo pacman -Syu
Then switch the Breeze global theme - remember to change everything.
Customisation carries it’s own risks - so yes, whatever splashes you change are taking some risk… purge that and go back to Manjaro or try something fresh.
Yes, we saw what you did there
Please also also add some system information:
inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width
Here the output of my system:

Thank you. It was only to confirm you were fully updated. All good.
As suggested previously, the easiest is to change to another splash screen (or don’t use one at all). I recall this was reported a lot around the time of the initial Plasma 6 updates.
I understood it to be long corrected, as I have seen no reports in recent times. It’s always possible that the respective file itself is damaged, or that is wasn’t previously updated for some reason – an incomplete update at some point, perhaps.
Until this is known, it’s best not to use this splash.
(I don’t use one at all)
Regards.
sudo pacman -Syu
return “nothing to do”
I have been using the Breath theme for years and am satisfied with it. I don’t like the Breeze theme.
I have already switched to Breeze (global design) and back for testing purposes. Behavior remains. The splash screen works on the other computers on which I have Mamjaro running.
…but now it is broken;
so you would do best to at least try following some of the suggestions given.
No surprise there.
You need to remove the Breath splash screen and use something else, at least until the problem can be corrected.
Which means the issue is limited to your installation.
You might try this:
1. Switch to the Breeze (global theme)
2. Make sure that Plasma Style, Window Decorations, Icons, Cursors, Splash Screen, and Login Screen (SDDM) are all set to Breeze.
3. Uninstall the Breath theme:
sudo pacman -Rdd plasma6-themes-breath
- Note: The above command is intended for this instruction only. Normally either
sudo pacman -R
orsudo pacman -Rns
should be used to uninstall a package. See more: pacman.
4. Reboot.
5. Install the Breath theme:
sudo pacman -Syu plasma6-themes-breath
6. Try the Breath theme again to see if the Splash Screen now works as expected.
Uninstalling and reinstalling a package is not often - in fact quite rarely - a solution to an issue.
When it is … that will usually be a symptom of some other problem - such as core files overwritten from outside of the package manager.
And even then … there is virtually no point to removing the package first, rather than simply re-installing it; missing files will be created, edited files will be overwritten or present a pacnew, et al.
The garbled breath splash is/was a problem of the breath theme itself.
It also seemed to impact different hardware differently - possibly augmented by other configurations such as early-KMS for those affected.
(Look back in forum history and find the troves of threads and individual posts on the same subject … circa around the Plasma6 update)
