Spectacle causes my display to cut out

After updating, Spectacle now causes my display to cut out while I’m cropping the rectangular region. Also, fullscreen games have the display flicker out.

Please provide your system information as described (below). I’m sure someone will help when they are able.

What follows is from a standard template.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

Note: By virtue of using the Manjaro forum you acknowledge and agree to follow Rules and Guidelines outlined; so, you really should read them:

Required Reading
Highly Recommended

Work with us, not against us

It is important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem. Please also be prepared to provide output from commands if/when asked.

Simply waiting for others to ask you questions is counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – and your clear, concise and accurate input is often relied upon in order to help you.

Please help others to make informed suggestions based on information you provide.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)
inxi man pages (manual)
If running `inxi` within a `chroot` environment
  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Could it be that you previously used X11 and now the default is Wayland?

If so - try wiping the content of local user’s cache in ~/.cache

Something like this should do

rm -rf ~/.cache/*

Sorry for the reply TWO WEEKS LATER. I made this post, then the forums crashed, then I forgot I made the post until I googled the problem again.

I have run the command you posted this and it it still occurring. :frowning:

here’s the inxi output:

Kernel 6.17 has reached EOL within the past week – updates are no longer available from the Manjaro repositories – 6.17 is no longer supported, and should be removed at your earliest convenience.

Either (or both) of kernels 6.18 (LTS) and 6.12 (LTS) are currently suggested.

I am now running the 6.18.1 kernel but still experiencing the same issues. However, 6.17 seems to be unwilling to uninstall. It gives the following statement:

Starting

:: removing linux617 breaks dependency ‘linux617’ required by linux-meta

Remove linux-meta first.

Quick tip: Always show the complete command output, including the command(s) that were used…

…and place the output in a pre-formatted scrollable text box (use the </> button) and not a quote box.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. However, this last time I didn’t use a command, I used the GUI Method of Manjaro Settings Manager.

I did some research on linux-meta, and isn’t it, uh, important? And supposed to prevent scenarios precisely like this one and upgrade kernels when they’re outdated?

Yes, it’s supposed to ensure you’re not left without a kernel, but sometimes, it just gets in the way.

Additionally, you cannot uninstall a kernel if it’s active (if it’s being used currently), and according to your inxi output, 6.17 is active.

Which kernels do you currently have installed apart from 6.17?

Ah, I see.

If 6.18 (LTS) is currently active, you can remove linux-meta followed by 6.17 – then install 6.12 (LTS) as a fallback.

I was GOING to use the command to make a list but the documentation posted above appears to be outdated…

~ user $ mhwd-kernel -li
zsh: correct 'user' to 'users' [nyae]? n
zsh: command not found: user
~ user $ mhwd-kernel -li
zsh: correct 'user' to 'users' [nyae]? y
users: invalid option -- 'l'
Try 'users --help' for more information.

The settings manager shows that I have 6.18.2-1 (which is currently active), 6.17.13-1, and 6.12.63-1.

UPDATE:
I have removed linux-meta and removed 6.17, then rebooted. Fullscreen apps are still making the display cut out though.

Mod edit:- Removed garbage characters from command output. No charge.

Please avoid posting garbage characters – all it takes is a little care when selecting the text to copy – thanks.

The user failed to use sudo.

  • mhwd-kernel requires elevated privileges.

Plus, it looks like you also typed user $ as part of the command – that only indicated a prompt (thus the different colour). Example: fred $ command-here.

Also install kernel 6.12 (LTS) – you must have a secondary fallback kernel.

I just copied the complete log, like I was asked to… will delete in the future.

I just copy/pasted the command as it was written into the console. I am relatively new to linux and barely know what I’m doing. The linked wiki page didn’t tell me I needed to run sudo, or that I needed to substitute “user” with my username. It just said that running this command would give me a list of kernels installed.

In my previous post I stated that 6.12 is already installed. It was the default kernel when I installed manjaro, but a friend told me that my gpu wouldn’t be as supported with that one and to upgrade to a different one, so I did. Never uninstalled the other one.

In fact, every example on that page (with the exception of the first mhwd-kernel -li which didn’t require sudo) clearly lists sudo before each command given.

No, it didn’t tell you that, and neither did I.

I gave an example “fred” of what the “user” implied as part of a prompt (the green text in the commands) – that should not be included as part of the actual command.

Yes, I had missed that. Then, you currently have 6.18 (LTS) and 6.12 (LTS) installed as a fallback. All good.

Oh. OH! Okay I get what you’re saying now. (Also, if I had actually clicked “copy to clipboard” it would’ve been fine. I’m gonna blame this head cold on my stupidity. /j)

mhwd-kernel -li  ✔
Currently running: 6.18.2-1-MANJARO (linux618)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux612
   * linux618

Problem still exists, though. Is it maybe a driver issue? I’m not seeing a driver manager on manjaro like there was on kubuntu…

It might be. You’re not using Nvidia, so the current issues with Nvidia drivers don’t apply.

  • Does the issue happen when using Wayland?
  • Does the issue persist in a new User account?

Creating a new User account (for testing) helps to isolate a problem; to discover whether it’s local or system wide.

That knowledge alone can help narrow it down.

Created new user, can confirm the problem was not on testuser’s account, only mine.

I… Am I not already using wayland? System Settings says I am…
(googles how to check, runs given command)

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE  ✔
wayland

Even worse, when attempting to get back to my own user account, the display shut off and remained that way until I forced shutdown with the power button. Ugh.

Well, that will give others a place to start.

I believe I meant to ask if the issue was on both Wayland and X11; some restored X11 after KDE disabled it. No matter.

There is a safer way:

REISUB/REISUO needs to be configured before it can be used - From memory, it might not be clear in the tutorial. If it isn’t, I’m sure someone will help out.
