Sound Unusual Behaviour

Hi All,

I have been using Manjaro for few weeks and I am having this problem where when I play any audio via VLC player or video via Firefox/Chrome browser, there is no audio. The video plays but there is no sound. So I have to go sound settings and change from current profile for example - Audio Stereo Output to Audio Stereo Duplex. Then I can hear audio. When the video stops playing or I have to play another video, I have to change the profile again from Audio Stereo Duplex to Audio Stereo Ouput. Another unsual behaviour is that when I play a youtube video, after changing the profile, the audio works. Then when I close the browser, and open VLC player, the audio does not work. I have to change the profile again. So I am not sure what changes I have to do to my settings to ensure this does not happen. I am using PulseAudio. Since I am new to Manjaro I am not sure what settings I have to make to make audio work permanently.

Thank you!

Please post more information about system and audio devices detected in PulseAudio

Data shows onboard audio is set to use profile for surround 2.1 output

set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-surround-21
Card #2
        Name: alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3

        Properties:
                alsa.card = "1"
                alsa.card_name = "HDA Intel PCH"

        Active Profile: output:analog-surround-21

Change card profile for onboard audio card to off (to clear any old user settings for the card that might be causing problems)

pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 off

then change the profile to stereo output

pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 output:analog-stereo

and set the default sink output

pactl set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo

If audio from VLC or browser is still not working as expected, check audio from applications to PulseAudio

pactl list sink-inputs

and from PulseAudio to ALSA

pactl list sinks

Thanks I will try this out and post the result here.

I tried using the command you gave, I was able to execute the first code.

pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 off

But when I tried executing the second command,

pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 output:analog-stereo

I get the error “Failure: no such entity”

How do I proceed?

My bad - previous commands were using card name for HDA NVidia card alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1

Use these commands to change profile for HDA Intel PCH card

pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 off
pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo

Command to set-default-sink was using correct card name and available profile

pactl set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo

I tried the commands, but it is still the same no change. I still have to change the profile, every time I want to listen. For example, I play a video in YouTube in Firefox, it does not play till I change the profile. Same thing happens when I play video via VLC.

Another strange thing I noticed now is that before I change the profile, if I mute the YouTube video it starts to play, but when I unmute, it stops playing.

I recently update my kernel when it asked me to. Could that be the reason?

Not related to this, I get this number of updates to be made called OS updates. Some of the packgage names are org.freedesktop.Platform but even when “apply” they keep popping up again and again. Is that a bug?

Thank you for your help!

No, it’s not a bug.

It is, however, something you are perhaps not aware of;

Because flatpak applications require supporting software, that must also be regularly updated; along with packages from the official Manjaro repositories or from the AUR (if it’s used).

This should take care of it:

flatpak update

Regards.

Thank you Soundofthunder!

I actually searched the forum and found the solution similar to what you have mentioned here. I tried updating the flatpak using the command you mentioned but it showed some error (which I am not able to produce here).

However, I went to the Add/Remove Software → Preferences → and checked Cache. The option “Remove only the uninstalled package” was not enabled. Once I enabled it, update packages did not show again.

But this sound issue is really bothering me. I am not really sure why it is making me switch profile everytime I want to watch of video. I tried searching the forum and google but not able to see if anyone has similar problem. It is driving me nuts!

I am not really sure about what may be causing this problem because data posted so far is not showing anything problematic, except for using 2.1 surround profile instead of stereo profile.

I suggest:

  1. Check audio playback from PulseAudio to ALSA
pactl list sinks
  1. Check for errors in PulseAudio systemd units
systemtctl --user -l --no-pager status pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service
  1. Check PulseAudio connections to audio playback devices
sudo fuser -av /dev/snd/pcm*p

Most welcome.

Quick tip:-

Use @ to mention another forum member. As you will see, the character triggers a small modal and you can select participating members from the dropdown.

This has a few advantages; not only does it prevent you from spelling a member’s name incorrectly, but also it notifies them that they were mentioned.

Otherwise, we may never know.

Thank you @soundofthunder and @nikgnomic I will try these commands.

The interesting thing is I found a similar issue in Arch forum two years ago but in that case there was pipewire and pulse audio both installed and it was suggested that removing one will fix the issue. However, the solution/methods to fix it was not clearly defined.

I will once again check PulseAudio connections. If not, then I have no other option to reinstall (but that is no guarantee that this issue will not appear again!)… the frustrating thing is that when I tried Manjaro in VM it worked flawlessly! Anyways… will check again!

Manjaro forum had similar misinformation from PipeWire evangelists a few years ago

pipewire is a multimedia server and pulseaudio is an audio server, but inxi used to report that they were both sound servers, but there is no sound (acoustic waves) in a digital system, only audio that requires a transducer (headphones/speakers) to produce audible sound

pulseaudio cannot be removed, but it can be replaced by pipewire-pulse.
Manjaro has manjaro-pipewire and manjaro-pulse metapackages to switch between audio servers.

If system is booted from a live ISO and audio is not working, issue is likely to be in ALSA rather than a software audio server.
Reinstalling pipewire-pulse might be a good workaround for a pulseaudio issue, but not for ALSA

That is the right direction:

This is how pipewire looks like with pipewire-pulse and pipewire-alsa:

  Server-3: PipeWire v: 1.4.5 status: active with: 1: pipewire-pulse
status: active 2: wireplumber status: active 3: pipewire-alsa type: plugin
    tools: pactl,pw-cat,pw-cli,wpctl

Normally you would remove Pulseaudio in favor of Pipewire or vice versa.

See here:

Just a quick update, after I reinstalled, everything works fine. The audio issue is gone. Before I reinstalled, I tried installing Pipewire-pulse but that did not make any changes/improvement. The audio still didn’t work/paused until I changed the profile each time I want to have audio. I sincerely hope I don’t get this issue anymore.

Thank you all for the help!

For clarity, do you mean that you reinstalled Manjaro; or was it pipewire you reinstalled?

If Manjaro, this topic can be closed without a solution, as reinstalling an OS never solved the actual issue, but works around it.

The presumption is that you reinstalled the OS. If it’s not the case, just ask a Moderator (via PM) to re-open the topic, if it’s needed.

For reference, it’s usually expected that you mark the post of whosoever helped you the most, as the solution to a topic you create; that is, in all cases where an actual solution was found (the button appears under every post).

Regards.

OP appears to have reinstalled their OS. Topic closed.
