Sound card not working sometimes

I have a sound blaster sound card that doesn’t work sometimes. when i first turn on my pc there is about a 50% chance it will work. when I restart my pc it always works. It used to work fine but it started having this issue a while ago. Ive tried switching back to previous kernels but issue still persists. Issue is only present with sound blaster card. other devices like mb audio work fine.
All i have found so far is that inxi output is different when its working and when its not working.

working:

The driver is not loaded in the “not working” scenario.

You could probably modprobe it.

… do you have to use the newest kernel? (614)

Presumably this wasn’t an issue with older ones.

tried sudo modprobe snd-emu10k1 and audio is still missing with same inxi output

dont particulaly need the newest kernel but ive tried going as far back as 66 but the issue persists. I believe 66 was the kernel I ran when i first installed and did not have audio issues but reverting back to it now doesnt fix the issue.
since the issue is intermittent im not quite sure exactly when it started so i dont know if it was a kernel update that caused it

so it doesn’t get loaded when you try to load it?

lsmod | grep snd_emu10k1

Or it gets loaded but still doesn’t work?

In any case: I can’t be of further assistance.

lsmod | grep snd_emu10k1:

snd_emu10k1 229376 0
snd_util_mem 12288 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_ac97_codec 196608 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_rawmidi 57344 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_seq_device 16384 3 snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi
snd_hwdep 20480 2 snd_hda_codec,snd_emu10k1
snd_pcm 200704 6 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec,snd_hda_core
snd_timer 57344 4 snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_hrtimer,snd_pcm
snd 155648 19 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hwdep,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_emu10k1,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi

seems like it is loaded but still not working

Thanks anyways!

@bluechimecho

You can update your bios. but that is BETA.
Now, you already have use BETA BIOS 8.01 [Beta] 2023/6/29.
There are various ways to think about it, but if you are already using a beta BIOS, you may want to consider updating it.

10.31[Beta]	2024/8/26	10.72MB

Try this to initialise all devices to default state

sudo alsactl init

If that does not work to get snd-emu10k1 driver loaded, run ALSA diagnostic script:

sudo alsa-info.sh --upload

updated my bios and haven’t had issues for a couple days but will have to give it a few more days to confirm that the issue is fixed.

thanks i will try this if the issue returns
