Sound Blaster X AE-5 / Built In Audio (No Output From Speakers)

Hey everyone. So I am giving KDE Plasma Manjaro Linux another shot because I’m utterly disgusted with windows and unfortunately I am unable to get my audio working. I’ve spent several hours messing with alsa, pulseaudio, etc and have had no results.

When looking at the speaker icon on the taskbar, it shows audio levels fluctuation as I am running Youtube videos as a test though there is no actual output.

I’ve scoured the internet, reddit, forums, youtube, etc. and can’t seem to find anything to get it to work. The card definitely works as prior to this setup I was playing sound on Windows 10 through the same card.

Help would be greatly appreciated. Below I have posted relevant information. Tysm!

Thank you guys so much!

Note: Not sure why the post wouldn’t put the code into sections as at the end. Sorry for the scrolling…

did you click on the icon and select the correct output device.

Yes. That was one of the first things I checked. I also checked the audio format, trying digital and analog output. The only audio that works is my monitors over displayport.

I also updated the kernel as there was an audio patch specifically for my sound card but no dice.

it looks like you have 3 outputs for sound, does any of the others work

One is an output to my monitors. That works. The other two are my sound card and my onboard sound card. Those two do not work. Unfortunately, those are the only two I care about working.

I saw something about device ID’s being different between some AE-5 cards but that doesnt explain why the onboard realtek audio doesnt work.

I figured it out. The sound card needed to be set to analog duplex mode in order to work. For anyone seeing this post in the future, be sure to check this. It is the only option that will enable output. At least for me. Thank you to those who commented on this post. I appreciate your time and support.

PulseAudio data for onboard audio ALC1220 is showing the device Profile is set to play audio to digital optical output

active profile: output:iec958-stereo

And the two other port options for analog audio playback are shown as unavailable

analog-output-lineout: Line Out (priority 9000, latency offset 0 usec, available: no)

analog-output-headphones: Headphones (priority 9900, latency offset 0 usec, available: no)

You might be able to change the profile to use an analog output even though it is shown as unavailable, but PulseAudio will try to switch away from a device detected as unavailable

I suggest you check ALSA controls for this card with either:

alsamixer --card=0

(or post response to amixer --card=0 here to show the ALSA settings in text-format)

make sure the controls for analog audio playback (Master , PCM, Headphones, Front)
are unmuted and audio levels turned up
If the optical output is not in use, controls for digital audio (IEC958) should be turned off/muted or disabled

Use this command to save any new ALSA settings so they are restored correctly when system is booted

sudo alsactl store

The AE-5 card has the profile set to <output:analog-stereo>
and analog-output-headphones is showing available: yes
but the output to speakers analog-output-lineout is shown as available: no

check ALSA controls for this card

alsamixer --card=0

I cannot find data about ALSA controls at the moment to know the names of settings to look for
but I think there is a setting in ALSA to switch between outputs for Line Out, Headphones and Surround Sound
and also an auto-mute setting to mute speakers if headphones are plugged in
