Soon: "Wayland-only" KDE version...?

Hi all

Does anyone know when Manjaro KDE will switch to “Wayland-only”? Will that happen with the next major update?

So long,
Andy

KDE 6.8 Will be Wayland-only. As far as I’m aware, the original estimate of “early in 2027” is still reliable:

Thanks

From my understanding this info is outdated, KDE 6.8 will be rolled out this week.

The question should be, when Manjaro will Roll Out this version and left everyone into dust who rely on X11?

Not to mentioned that its KDE questionable decision (Manjaro is innocent around that Topic), to force everyone on newer Hardware!

Yes, it’s a controversial topic, for sure. It’s either bad or good, depending which of X11 or Wayland works best for the individual. I’m in the “Wayland works for me” camp so I’m fine with KDE’s decision, though there are some systems that still favour X11.

I missed the announcement over the weekend. Thanks for the update.

@Andy-452

It looks like 6.8 may land sooner than the “early 2027” estimate.

Manjaro will of course have little choice than to follow the Arch Linux timeline, followed by the usual filtering through the branches. At this time, I am unable to give an estimate of when KDE 6.8 will land in Manjaro.

The best I can suggest is to keep monitoring the Announcement threads.

Regards.

It doesn’t force people to newer hardware. I have a very old over 10 years old Dell running KDE with Wayland.

Excellent News.

For those who don’t want to run Plasma on Wayland, there is always SonicDE… ain’t FOSS great.

You are correct. Plasma 6.8 will be officially released tomorrow.

However, KDE will continue to release bugfix versions of X11-supporting Plasma 6.7 for the next few months, with the final release being Plasma 6.7.7 on Tue 2027-01-19. That will be the last version of Plasma with X11 support.

I’m fairly sure that Unstable and Testing branches will be moved to Plasma 6.8 ASAP.

In the past, I have occasionally seen Stable branch receive the next bugfix release of the old Plasma branch when Unstable & Testing have already moved onto the new one, and Plasma 6.7.6 is due to be released on Tue 2026-11-03, so there is a chance that Stable branch users may get that if Unstable & Testing users encounter issues with 6.8.

However, I see little chance that Plasma 6.7.7 will ever reach the Manjaro repos. All branches will have moved on to 6.8 by then.
