Some games refuse to run with newer versions of Wine

Updated via TTY, no issues!
I did downgrade Wine to version 10.7.1 using manjaro-downgrade because a specific game (Halo Custom Edition) refuses to run in newer versions in any way (I tried everything) and since I’m admin on a racing server there I needed to do that to being able to do my duties even tho I know It’s not recommended…

There is the AUR package AUR (en) - wine32 which takes couple hours to compile. Don’t know if they already offer binaries for it … Seems not all apps can work with WoW64 yet.

I wonder if you might be better off running this in a virtual machine rather than using WINE? With virtualisation built-in to modern CPUs, a VM can be as fast as a native OS and not over resource-hungry. And from my (admittedly limited) experience, Windows software is more reliable in a VM than with WINE.

For now, I added the line below to /etc/pacman.conf.

IgnorePkg   = wine wine-gecko wine-mono winetricks

Wouldn’t bottles or lutris with an configured older wine work?

Did you try recreating the prefix as was posted as a known issue about a month ago? :wink:

Either way, I highly recommend using Proton, custom Wine versions, etc. specifically designed for gaming with great tools like Lutris or Heroic.

My HP Pavillion 15 has only 4GB RAM (ouch!) so imagine compile that here xD
No binaries for it :confused:

I have dual-boot Windows 10/Manjaro Linux. I can play there but I prefer using Manjaro, I avoid touching Windows… using it if I really, really need it…

I rarely use Lutris (last time many years ago), I can pick wine version in Lutris? :scream_cat:

Yes, yes I did but the issue persisted, the game runs like 1 FPS (funny as hell) but the audio (Halo music intro is beautifull) normal speed tho…

To be expected;

In my opinion you should never use the base WINE offered in the repositories for GAMES.
Modified version like Proton, or Glorious Eggroll, are the ones you want to use.

Lutris or Bottles are preferred to run games with these version of Proton/WINE as already said above. This way it never breaks on system WINE update you stay on your custom version.

This may be true. In any case, it’s likely better to contact Steam (for example) for their take on the situation.

Yes you can pick the wine,proton,… versions with lutris, heroic launcher, steam, umu-launcher individually for each application/game.

Steam: you can add Non-Steam games to the Steamclient and than run it via proton.
Additionally you can manage the Proton-Versions with

I will try Lutris or running the game trough Steam’s Proton since in Bottles the game (Halo CE) is known for not working there, thank you for your feedback and tips!
You guys have a nice day!

I tried on Steam, after several attempts the game (Halo CE) works forcing proton compatibility with version Runtime Legacy however probably because my low end laptop I have better performance and more FPS on Wine than running the game trough Steam, only thing left is trying on Lutris but I have no experience with that application…

@ARSManiac: for gaming on linux i allways check protondb.com before installing a game. There you can check how others run the game; or if it is runable on linux at all.

Multiple installers for Lutris available Halo: Combat Evolved - Lutris

Also adding a game manually is not complicated, first check Lutris settings, configure WINE and download various versions you want available, then set one as default like a Lutris custom version or whatever, then add a game from the [+] button on top left. and you can add an already installed game by browsing to the game executable. Many information on internet about Lutris.

I tried Lutris, they have Halo Combat Evolved and in it a script installation for Halo Custom Edition specificaly! Since I have a key I proceed with it, it installed all the updates and tools to play online, I then tried the game, it works flawlessly even better than wine.
Thank you for the app recommendation and the tips!
