Some applications flickering under wayland

Hi,

I’m suffering from a display issue for a week since I’ve updated system fully, and haven’t found any perfect solutions yet. Some applications(eg. virtualbox, xfreerdp,latte-dock etc) flickering under wayland, while I switch to xorg everything works normally.(but I prefer to stick on wayland, because some configuration only works in wayland.)

Examples in virtualbox (Not just the windows has the same issue as well as Linux in virtualbox and some applications run on the host machine)

Prior Actions

  1. Update Manjaro system fully via sudo pacman -Syyu
  2. Update Windows system(Dual boot) and BIOS(I have no idea it is relevant or not)

Solutions and guides I already tried

  1. switch xfreerdp to wlfreerdp, no flickering but input(or display) has latency.
  2. Enable DRM and KMS mentioned by this link
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland#Xwayland
  3. Reinstall nvidia driver followed by this link
    https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Configure_Graphics_Cards
  4. Downgrade linux67-nvidia via command sudo downgrade linux67-nvidia, but it won let me do that due to unresolvable dependencies.
  5. Try to set fbdev=0 (and have to set to 0, if 1 Flip event timeout shows up)mentioned in that post
    https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/kde-wayland-is-broken-once-again-with-nvidia-550-54-14-kernel-6-7-6/283900

Any hints or work-arounds would be highly appreciated.

Sorry English is not native lanuage if some expressions odds, I’m glad to give more details.

You should not have vesa.

sudo mhwd -r pci video-vesa

This is a known problem with xwayland and nvidia.

But if I understand correctly - your system should be hybrid, and should be running amdgpu by default.

In whatever case, please ensure your browsers are being launched in native wayland mode.

I did’n install video-vesa

 $ mhwd -li
> Installed PCI configs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime 2023.03.23 false PCI
           video-linux 2018.05.04 true PCI

If I run sudo mhwd -r pci video-vesa I will get

sudo mhwd -r pci video-vesa
Error: config 'video-vesa' is not installed!

Oh sorry, -l &then& -li, gotchya.

Still though, if that PRIME profile is in use then it should be amdgpu by default.
(making me unsure of whether it is related to the linked nvidia issue)

We can test out the prime;

glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
prime-run glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'

I have used envycontrol change to nvidia for a long time, and no apparent errors, since the fully system update last week.

$ envycontrol -q
nvidia

And the two commands mentioned above display like this.

$ glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'

OpenGL renderer string: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU/PCIe/SSE2
prime-run glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
OpenGL renderer string: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU/PCIe/SSE2

Well then prime commands wont work as expected and you would be using nvidia for everything.
So the above bug does apply.

Well, assuming you are using xwayland in the case of these applications.

It still makes sense to try running them in native wayland.

PS.
Ways of checking whether a window is xwayland can be found here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland#Detect_Xwayland_applications_visually

Supposedly recent versions of firefox should launch under wayland mode automatically, but that could also be interrupted by other settings. Here is the entry for starting ff with wayland:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Firefox#Wayland

It’s hard to use extramaus and xorg-xeyes, for instead I use qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin org.kde.KWin.showDebugConsole

It seems all glitched applications are using xwayland(glitches not for google chrome)

I have set XWAYLAND_NO_GLAMOR to 1 mentioned in this issue
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/issues/1317

The flickering has gone, but some more errors comes
eg. clash-verge do not shows the panel

PS.
The firefox of host machine works fine under wayland and it do launch as wayland mode automatically . The pictures in the main thread were captured from an virtualbox guest machine which run firefox.

In addition, the Display configuration in System Settings shows there are two devices even no external monitor has connected(in xorg there is only one device that is built-in screen)

I was more suggesting run the browsers without xwayland, as wayland native.
I see you checked this with firefox … with chromium based browsers you can use flags.
(ex chrome://flags ; #ozone-platform-hint)

Sorry I cant be of more help with the nvidia in general, I dont have any such devices.
I suggest keeping an eye on that bug report.
Or of course using an xorg session if that works better for you.

Thanks,

I would switch back to xorg but it’s not perfect for now.

This section in Hyprland wiki makes sense but still not work for xfreerdp in full mode.

https://wiki.hyprland.org/Nvidia/#fixing-random-flickering-nuclear-method

I will try to use nvidia-beta instead

I have tried many different version drivers but no luck. Until I upgraded my motherboard BIOS, and set the configuration as before, everything seems normally. It is really weird.

Mark this post as self-solved.

Despite what some would say … this is actually a rather important thing to do … also for compatibility and performance.

And I usually suggest it, but missed it this time

Oh well, it wasnt very old either. But E17KKAMS.119 2024-03-19 is newer.
MSI does not appear to give notes on the changes, so I couldnt say what was in the update.
